Suggestions for matching an Invader on SSH setup?

Hi there,

I have a Jackson USA SL1 Soloist with the typical SSH config and 3 way toggle…..I have an Invader that I want to install in the bridge. I was reading that I need to have the 2 single coils match that output for balance.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what Duncan single coils could do that? Do I have to have the same type for both singles? Quarter pounds kind of jumped out at me? maybe?

For reference, I play prog metal (rhythm AND leads) but I am handicapped when it comes to equipment technology!
Any help or info is greatly appreciated! Feel free to “dumb down” the answer for me, lol.

A lot of people like to have the output match across pickups, and that makes good sense...but you don't "have to" have them match up.

Eg. While I generally like to have balanced output levels across pickus, in hss guitars I like to match the split humbucker to the other singles so there's no volume imbalance, but switching from split to full humbucker there's a volume boost for some extra kick when needed.

It really depends on what you want out of the singles, there are loads of options and no, they don't need to be two of the same pickup either.

Welcome to the forum!

Having any kind of traditional-sounding singles match the output of the Invader is a hard ask. Is hum cancelling important? Do you want them to sound like singles or do you want them to sound like humbuckers?

Thank you for the reply Mincer! To be honest, I like variety and have plenty of Jacksons, so I would be open to either single coil or humbucker sound suggestions as options to compare and contrast. I am actually kind of intending to use this one particular SL1 as a trial guitar so there’s some flexibility.

To match in tone and to get close in output, look at the Hot Rails neck and middle. The Quarter Pound is also a good choice...it will hum, and won't be scooped like a traditional single coil, but it does have *some* single-coil-ish properties, and has a lot of output.

What do you want the single coils to sound like ? You don't need them to match the output, mismatched output is a thing too

But I will say Quarter Pounds would do the job pretty nice if you do want something pretty close. They are not only my favorite single coil, they are my favorite sounding pickup, period
