Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

writing / recording electronica. I don't need a rock screamer / high output axe, I have an original restored 72 SG with the stock PAF's for that. I"ve never been terribly thrilled with it honestly and may well sell it.

what I just picked up is a ibanez A 75. the stock pickups are junk. I am thinking Benedetto B6 for neck for classic clean rich jazz tone, and Phat P90 in bridge for brighter more rockabilly sound. love the staple pups but way too expensive for what they would go into. any other ideas ? not really that thrilled with PAF sound which I find uneven, uninteresting, dated. like the sound of steve howe, other traditional jazz / fusion players.

APH-1B is the best I can come up with from Duncan.

Is the Phat Cat really out of your price range?

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

I think putting in about $350 of pups into a $300 gtr seems less than ideal. if I came into a higher end instrument, sure I'd do it if I wasn't happy with how it sounded. I can live with around $200 or so for Ben B6 + phat P90

In the neck from DiMarzio I'd look at the Air Norton and Air Zone. You'll likely need to find something with equal or hotter output for the bridge if you want them to work in concert with one another; perhaps the Gravity Storm Neck model would do the trick with the Air Norton or the Breed Bridge with the Air Zone.

thanks. taking a look. never been much of a fan of dimarzio stuff, but if they have something that works and I can get it shipped in a reasonable time frame...

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

Air Nortons are pretty common on the used market. I haven't checked on the others for quite a while.

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

found a bunch of YT samples of clean playing and they hurt how bright they are.

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

That's unfortunate. Can you provide one that you find typical so that I can get calibrated?

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

If the clean in the first video with the tone rolled back doesn't cut it then you'll need to look elsewhere. I think the clean sounds fabulous even with the tone full-up myself.

The second video is of an Air Norton S, which isn't the same thing by any means.

I definitely didn't recommend the Tone Zone for the bridge.

Thanks. No painfully bright and thin for what i want. Might have to fork out for a fender twin or music man 212. Didn't think it was gonna be this hard

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

Why not just EQ? You're gonna do that with synths and whatnot anyway, i suppose.

Loads of full-spectrum content from the pickup is an asset, not a problem.

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

I never thought there would come a day when the Air Norton was described as painfully bright in the neck position.

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

well thats what I heard. To be specific, looking for more of a Ronny Jordan or Metheny sound if that gives you a better reference point.

EQ is something I generally go light on. When recording I use little to no EQ on my synths, some top end compression.

I have no idea what sounds you are after, or I would help. Can you post a video of the type of music you want to cover?

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

The construction of the guitar, the amp and the way it is adjusted, and a tone control will have a dramatic influence over the tone.

The more I review the discussion the more I'm convinced that a Gravity Storm Neck in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck would be your best second choice over a Phat Cat (there is no "Phat P90") and a Benedetto B6.

Speaking of the Benedetto B6...

Not too bright for you???

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

Have you considered a set of Phat Cats? A Phat Cat in the neck should give you a good jazz sound.

Re: Suggestions for NON rock - electronica

Right. It's just called a Phat Cat.

As far as the attack goes, both pickups I mentioned are A5 so I don't know that I would agree with it being a problem.

I'm surprised no one has suggested a 59 or Duncan Distortion Neck with a rough A4. <- Not that I am. ;)
