Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

I have a vertical 2x12 cab that I've put V30s in but it is way too bright. The V30 I have in my 1x12 sounds very warm and full so I thought they would work well in the 2x12.

I've gone back to the original 70/80s which are a little better but still much brighter than I want. I know the Swamp Thangs are pretty warm and full but they are a bit pricey.

I'm running a Blackstar ht20 and want it for more high gain stuff.

Any suggestions for fuller, warmer speakers that are more budget priced?

Thx

I think the G12H-75 is a great speaker for what you're looking for.

I think they would mix well with a V30 in a 2x12. The 12-T has scooped mids and a full low end while he V30 have a pronounced midrange....
Something to experiment with...

What cab?,,,,,, and is it a vertical on wheels? Is it closed or open-back or half?
New V30s? What V30 type? 16ohm speakers in an 8ohm cab I assume.?

Speakers with hemp cones, like the Tone Tubbys, tend to be warm and mellow.

Vintage 30’s sound a little bright to me...almost always. I like them tho.

You might try some Beam Blockers, or tape a 4” cardboard circle over the grill, over the voice coil of each speaker to block the beam. Experiment.

Look at the Creamback 65 or 75 if you want a more pleasing tone to the ear. I find V30s to be harsh, which is why I've pulled them out of every cab I've bought with them. Yes... they laser beam through a band mix. But if you mostly play at home, they are far too harsh.

My favorite 4x12 of all time has a pair of EVH Greenbacks on top, and a pair of H30 black backs on bottom. It's so rich and pleasing to the ear. Love it!

Supposedly, the WGS Veteran 30 has solved that harsh upper midrange thing...I’ve got one on order as we speak.

Well, I didn't want to say cause everyone is going to bag it, but there is a reason I wanted it...

A Marshall MX212A, vert, no wheels, closed back, 2x12 16ohm, new Chinese V30s and very generously sized compared to other 2x12s... but yes it is particleboard >cringe<

... and yes, I expect a barrage of... 'oh no, that is your problem. You'll never get a good sound out of particleboard'... but I'd rather hear constructive suggestions, plz.

Thx for the info, but it's not just a matter of a subtle tweak. I'm looking for a substantially warmer speaker.

Yes, I was thinking of creambacks and was hoping someone would confirm they are much warmer than the V30s, and I thought of starting with 1 to mix with the V30. Maybe adding the second if I think I need it later.

But it is interesting how different the V30 in my 1x12 cab sounds. Obviously there are a lot of different variables but it is quite amazing how warm that one sounds.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

It's probably the upper V30 in the vertical 2x12 that's ripping your head off. Especially considering that the top baffle is angled. Just for curiosity sake, lay your vertical 2x12 down on it's size and see if that changes things. You may be better off with a mix of 2 speakers. Maybe keeping the V30 on the bottom and finding something warmer for the top.

I doubt it's the MDF cabinet. Could possibly be contributing but not the main reason.

Hmmm... good to know. I remember when they were getting rolling and were selling for $30 (or was it $50?) a piece. Man... I should have ordered a bunch.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Another thought. You could try a beam blocker. I think they are about 20 bucks from Weber. Or, look online for DIY info.

edit. I see that Lew beat me to it.

Thx. That is good to know cause I was going to ask which speaker to swap first. Yes it does have the angled top.

I did think of lying it down as an experiment but didn't want to know the answer, so I didn't try it. I'm determined to have a vertical cab so don't want to prove horizontal might be better ;)

Yes, I have heard the 12T goes well with V30s to give a full spectrum coverage but I quite like strong mids, just less uppers and more bottom. I don't think I need much top end for higher gain stuff.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

WGS Retro 30 coupled with a Reaper HP. I have three 2X12 cabs and this pairing is the warmest. The other two (also mixed) are: V30 + G12H55; Swamp Thang + Wizard. The Celestion pairing is the brightest.

Have you viewed THIS? It's interesting.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

I have a cab with two V30's and two Creamback H-75's, and, even though the CB's don't have the strident upper mids of V30's, they've got more rasp/air up top. I wouldn't say they are warmer.

Look into the Celestion A-Type or the Eminence Texas Heat.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Well the G12H is described as 'firmer bass and more pronounced top end' compared to the G12M greenback.

So maybe not?

Actually Greenback sounds way brighter than G12H. I'd describe top end in it to be wider rather than more pronounced. Greenback has loud upper mids that makes it sound harsh on top.

Thicker low end with G12H also helps a lot balancing the speaker. I'd say V30 is scooped, Greenback mid-heavy and G12H is exactly between those two.

(I just went through Celestions in search for good speaker, ended up to G12H because of the reasons explained above)

EDIT: I'm speaking about G12H30 here, G12H75 is different speaker I have no experience with.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Until any speaker is thoroughly broke in and has aged some it will be harsh. I have found G12M Greenbacks are warm-after they break in. But that period between new and broke in with any speaker can be rough.

It may be a good experiment taking the V30 out of the 1x12 and putting in the 2x12 and take one the harsh v30s and put it in the 1x12?

Not all V30s are created equal. Marshall and Mesa both have their own proprietary versions which many think sound better than the regular current production V30. Its a subtle difference though.
