Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Until any speaker is thoroughly broke in and has aged some it will be harsh. I have found G12M Greenbacks are warm-after they break in. But that period between new and broke in with any speaker can be rough.

It may be a good experiment taking the V30 out of the 1x12 and putting in the 2x12 and take one the harsh v30s and put it in the 1x12?

Not all V30s are created equal. Marshall and Mesa both have their own proprietary versions which many think sound better than the regular current production V30. Its a subtle difference though.

+1

My first thought was wondering if these "harsh" V30s have been broken in yet.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

I meant to type G12H30. I just put the 75 into my Marshall DSL40c and I think it just overrode my typing. I'm not crazy about the 75 honestly. I'm going back to the 65 Creamback in it to see if I like it more.

Sorry for the wrong suggestion.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

I have a cab with two V30's and two Creamback H-75's, and, even though the CB's don't have the strident upper mids of V30's, they've got more rasp/air up top. I wouldn't say they are warmer.

Look into the Celestion A-Type or the Eminence Texas Heat.

Now you are really confusing me :(
I thought Celestion A Type (A=American) are designed for the Fender 'bright' Sound?

I guess it's my own fault... it is all subjective and relative. One persons 'bright' is another persons 'warm'... and my 1x12 V30s sounds very warm, presumably because of the cab/position/etc/etc (it is exactly the same age and supplier)

Maybe I just have to do the research and make an educated guess.

^^^ Not a bad idea at all.
Lynchback on top and leave the V30 on bottom. Then you'll have a 100w cab.
The Lynchback is not as efficient, but with it facing your head it should balance the V30 nicely.
Then just work with the EQ.

Thanks. I've done a lot of speaker swapping, and when it comes to 1x12 and 2x12 cabs, I've developed some expertise. There are so many great speakers on the market. Celestion, Eminence, WGS, and a lot of people don't realize what great speakers Jensen makes apart from the Fender crowd. They've got the Electric Lightning, Nighthawk, Blackbird, Falcon, etc. Those speakers are amazing for modern players. The Electric Lightning and Blackbird are pretty popular, but the Nighthawk is my favorite. These speakers are not expensive either.

Back to the OP though, yeah the Lynchback is a really great speaker and does not have the spikiness of a V30. I have a 65 Creamback that came with my Friedman. I like it very much, but a lot of people rave about how great it is and I don't think it's better than other Celestions. The G12H30, V30, Classic Lead, Greenback... are all awesome. To me, the Creamback is great as it provides a subtle refinement for the Dirty Shirley, but it's too smooth for a BE-100. The BE needs a little edgier speaker in my opinion, and the Classic lead 80 + V30 is the perfect pairing for a Friedman BE if you're running a 2x12. However, I digress. Carry on.

If you like Seventy 80s better than anything, then you're not going to listen to any advice I have to give you.

Huh? What are you talking about?????
"I've gone back to the original 70/80s which are a little better but still much brighter than I want."
So that means I like them more than anything??????
And I'm not going to listen to you, why?

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Consider an Eminence Legend V12? I dropped one into my 2x12 and it is pretty warm but still handles high gain really well. And very reasonable price.
I have only tried 4 other speakers: wgs Veteran 30, wgs ET-65, Tonker, and Tonkerlite. The V12 is the warmest of them all and it is also the least expensive.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Thanks for all the help.

Not all the suggestions are readily available to me in Oz, but I decided to go with the creamback 65. There were a couple of votes for them, Celestion's description made them sound like they should suit and a couple of videos comparisons swayed me.

I'll post the results after it gets here next week.

Because I think the Seventy 80s are the most lifeless speakers I've ever played. I can't see them being better than anything. I'm pretty sure their sole purpose is to sell cabinets or amps that have a "Celestion speakers" sticker on the outside.

I find the seventy 80 speakers decent. I like others more but some less as well. Just a matter of taste, style, amp, pedals, guitar etc. For my taste and use, the Celestion Rocket 50 is the worst!

Come on man. It doesn't SUCK, nor is it lifeless, but there are some good reasons why it's cheaper. They're kind of in the same ballpark as the GT1275's, which I barely like. You will be surprised at how good they CAN sound depending on whether they're broken in and which amp they're played through. Tone is 60% in the fingers.

Well, you sound very intelligent and present a compelling argument, so I WILL listen to you. ;)

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Holy crap! Just got the creamback 65 installed and wow, what a difference. Now, that is the sound I had in my head.

Just perfect! :)

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Hate to dig up this old thread, but for other's reference, who might be searching and come across this - I just discovered why my Ampeg 1x12 cab with the Celestion V30 sounds so warm and full compared to my Marshall/or anything else, with V30s.

I opened up the cab the other day and discovered it has a floating baffle design. The speaker is not attached to the front board but a second board that is lifted with small 1/4" blocks on each corner and only mounted at the corners. It is a large cab for a 1x12 and the baffle board extends just short of the sides, so it is also large and must move/vibrate quite a lot.

I really suspected there was something about the design of this cab, because the V30s in other cabs sounded very bright, shallow and punchy whereas this cab sounds so full, deep and warm.

Interesting!

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

For high gain, Eminence metal combo (Swamp Thing + Texas Heat), WGS Retro 30 + HM75 (similar to V30+G12T75), or Jensen MOD speakers if you want affordability.

Re: Suggestions For Warmer Speakers

Just crank the volume man. They harder they are pushed, the better the v30's sound.
