Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

Is there anyone using Suhr Aldrich pickups for heavy stuff (Feared, Architects, Monuments)?
I need new pickups for my Ibanez PGM301 found a good deal for this one but I never tried one. So, any comment and pickup advice will be appreciated.

Also, my other choice is ordering special wind bridge humbucker from my local winder. He's well known for making quality products and when I talked to him I wanted something like Bare Knuckle Nailbomb/Holydiver. He's sure he can nail it and it will be at least as good as BKP. I don't know if it's possible or a safe bet. But if I won't be able to get Aldriches it seems like my only option (because my budget is so tight for BKP's).

What do you guys thing? Will Aldriches do the job for me? Or any suggestions from any brand will be appreciated.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

I’ve installed these for people a few times. They are similar to a Duncan JB, but don’t seem as muddy in the top end. I normally don’t like these types of humbuckers but they sound good. Should be great for heavy music.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

Generally, people say its so clear, articulate but tonally like JB etc. That means its so versatile, tonally rich... I don't know, it'd be great if someone knows and tried it for many types. I don't want a mush in the low end and woolly mids. I need a good, clear, percussive attack, maybe a bit woody and edgy (like nailbomb), that's very important for me. I'm curious for if Aldrich have these qualities.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

I think these would get the tone you want. They weren’t muddy, which surprised me.

Yes, I've used them. I play mostly hard rock and metal and they can do any of that in spades. Honestly, I didn't think they sang like a JB does for leads, but they were definitely tighter and had some similar tonal qualities.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

Okay then Aldrich seems good enough but what about comparing with BKP's or Duncan's? For example, how different is Aldrich and Nailbomb? Is the BKP's really super clear, tight, powerful and insanely good? I've read a lot of hype, and I'm curious if it's really "that" good?

I have a set of BKP Rebel Yells. Unfortunately I haven’t tried the Nailbombs.
They’re great pickups, no doubt. I’m not sure that I’d classify them as something on a different level than Duncan/Dimarzio...

Tbh, I’ve got a “thing” for Fokin pickups. They are handmade pickups made in Moscow by Ilya Fokin. I’ve got them in 2 guitars and I have 2 sets on order as we speak. I’m more of a rock guy than a metal guy so my selection in pickups would likely be different from yours, but he has a pickup for whatever style you want. Plus, he will make them to your specifications at no extra charge.
Here is a short video of my Kramer/Quickrod. This is a “Hot Breeze” bridge and a “Rocket Queen” neck.

Maybe the Duncan thrash factors (dave mustaine) would be close to your needs.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

It seems like a good stuff but importing from russia might be pricey for me. The thing is, I'm trying to find used or from local winder, because of my currency problems buying pickups directly is so expensive.
To narrow down my possible choices:
1) Suhr Aldrich Set
2) Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5/Pearly Gates
3) Dimarzio Titan Bridge and stock PAF Pro Neck (Which I'm not very happy with)
4) Ordering a special wind Bare Knuckle Nailbomb/Holydiver kind of bridge pickup from my local winder (ERS Pickups) and stock PAF Pro Neck

I've had pretty good time with SH5 Custom in my previous guitar. But I'm still curious about if Suhr and BKP copy is superior than Duncan/Dimarzio stuff. I've never tried. But I have to mention that my stock PAF Pro in bridge definetely not doing the job for me. It doesn't drive my amp enough (I'm using THR10X directly because I shouldn't have a mess wtth me at this moment) and it's like there's no bite, no attack, no body just dead, smooth and weak tone with strange midrange response (maybe woolly is the word idk).

Trust me when I tell you, Fokin is the most affordable pickups around.
I’m in the US and the prices with shipping is cheaper than anything I could buy domestically.
Email him and see what he can do for you.
He speaks enough English so you can communicate.

I have never tried them (I want to) but in theory the Thrash Factor should do what you want too.

With regards to the Nailbomb, it is clear and tight. Personally, I didn't like it and I don't love BKP pick ups, at least the ones I've tried. They are almost too clear with a clean signal running through them. There are many who don't like or use BKP for this reason. They are high quality and sound good, this is nothing more than a preference thing. I preferred Duncan's (SH5, JB, Black Winter, etc.) over BKP.

For really heavy stuff, I actually love the PRS Tremonti pick up. It falls off the radar and it should not. I use that or Motor City Afwayu's now. I still love Duncan though and will always have a guitar loaded with them.

I mailed to fokin, if I will be able to arrange shipping and payment maybe I'll give it a shot.

I really like SH5 Custom too. But too clear with a clean signal seems pretty interesting to me. I guess I have to try the BKP's. And I'm more confused now, Suhr, Duncan SH5, Fokin, BKP they're all good making a choice is veeery hard :ban:

Great!
I usually use the “order@fokinpickups.com” email. It seems to go right through.
Remember, there is a time difference. For me it’s about an 8 hour time difference. So I usually hear back the next day after I email.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

Yes, I'm waiting for the reply. Fokin seems like an interesting brand, it's cheap, they have lots of different winds and demos sounded great. But I'm still considering Suhr's and any review about them (especially for drop-tuned modern kind of tones) would be good for me.

Re: Suhr Aldrich Pickups For Heavy Stuff

I have an Aldrich bridge in a superstrat and a Custom/PG in an LP. While the custom is good, the Aldrich is more alive and punches harder. The Custom is more versatile though since it has the paf vibe.

I play standard tuning thrash and instrumental rock like Vai or Paul Gilbert. The Aldrich is awesome for both applications. That said, it’s tight but not super tight. I’m not sure how it would hold up for detuned stuff. Why not use the Black winter for that?

That tone was really nice. Damn you and that Splawn Quick Rod.

The Rocket Queen set sounds right up my alley. I'll have to order a set next year after I'm back on my feet.

I like black winters or thrash factors but that's the reason why I'm not looking at them.

Custom was pretty good for drop-tuning if Aldriches are as tight as custom and you said it's more alive and punchy it's the one for me.

Ha!
I really like my QR.
But all of the amps you are looking at are great. You can’t go wrong with any of them.
