Suhr SSV+ and Thornbucker Clip

I know some guys were asking about the Suhr Thornbucker and higher gain. While I'm still waiting for my Thornbucker + to get here, I thought I would do a clip of the SSV+, which will be in the same ballpark. I'll do another video with the Thornbucker + when it arrives. Playing through my 2005 Spawn QuickRod. Using 3rd gear and kicking in some Tumnus at one point while I was on the Thornbucker neck pickup. It is a wonderful pickup. Never really gets muddy, but it doesn't sound of feel thin either. Hope you enjoy.

Sounds great, man!
Question:
How the hell are you not feeding back like crazy in gear 3?!?
In gear 3 I can barely control it even with the loop volume.

I have been digging gear 1 lately though but the added compression in gear 3 just kills.

I have to use 3rd gear if I want a usable clean channel. On the 2005 model, the clean channel is directly effected by the gain level on the dirty channel. Anything above noon on the gain knob and you loose the cleans in the clean channel. So I run the gain around noon and they am able to have a dedicated clean channel. I have never found it to be uncontrollable.

Yeah, I have read that about the early Quickrods. Mine is a 2016 fully loaded model and the clean and dirty channels are completely independent of one another with the exception of a global presence control.
In 1st gear I’ve been running the gain at about 3 o’clock and it’s pretty easily controlled but at that gain setting in 3rd gear its tough to keep controlled.

Re: Suhr SSV+ and Thornbucker Clip

Funny timing, I was just browsing through the pickups on the Suhr website yesterday. I would probably gel most with the SSV+ or SSH, but that’s just speculation. How do you feel about the SSV+? Do you have experience with any other Suhr humbuckers?

I have played the Aldrich set, SSV, SSV+, SSH+ and DSH+. The Aldrich set is a love/hate thing for me. Sometimes I really love them, and other times I can't get them out of my guitar fast enough. I liked the SSV, but wanted more push, so I got the SSV+. Really dig the SSV+, as it sits in a good range. It's not overly hot, but has some push to it that kicks the front of you amp a bit. If I wasn't wanting to try the Thornbucker +, I'd be happy to stick with the SSV+. I wasn't a fan of the SSH+. It's hot and bright. Not really a fan of bright pickups. The DSH+ was another favorite. In fact, I really need to pick up another one. I had it in the bridge of a rather bright Les Paul, and it made that guitar sing.

Was this the clip? It's not showing up in your post for me, for some reason. I assume it is, and thanks! That's actually a good reference for me since I have a Splawn Pro Mod. I'll be looking forward to your thoughts on the Thornbucker Plus. :)

Re: Suhr SSV+ and Thornbucker Clip

I’ve tried Thornbucker and DSH+ and strongly disliked both compared to several other traditional brand humbuckers. I use a variety of gain settings/tones and found both Suhr units to be disappointing performers. I’ve been told that no two pickups sound alike...as in two consecutive units, built same line same shift will be slightly different, tonally. I still have an SSH+ here to try but not sure I want to after those duds. I will finish off by saying I’ve tried stock Fender pick ups that sounded fine so maybe this custom pick up thing is just not for me.
