Suhr Thornbucker+ set

Ok, here's a clip I did with the Suhr Thornbucker+ set. First I will say that the Thornbucker+ bridge pickup is a brutally uncompressed pickup. I actually found myself fighting the guitar for this clip. While I love the tonal curve of the pickup, I definitely felt like I didn't have enough push from the pickup. Which is weird considering that the BKP Mules are in the same resistance range as the Thornbucker+, and I can easily get along with those. At one point I dimed the gain on 3rd gear OD2, and still didn't feel like the pickup was working with me. I of course do not have the chops or skill of Mr. Thorn, and these pickups definitely let me know about it. lol Anyway... here's the clip.

Re: Suhr Thornbucker+ set

I just watched it a little bit ago. Thanks for taking the time!

It sounded great. I fight with my Burstbuckers Everytime I play higher gain stuff too. But my results aren't as good as what I heard here. And brutally open is also a good way to describe the BBs.

I'll probably go ahead and try a Thornbucker Plus because my own curiosity is nagging at me. I definitely like what I heard in the SSV+ clip, though. It's almost like a refined Screamin' Demon. So I think it'd work great in one or more of my Dinkys.

The SSV+ is definitely easier to play. And a more refined Demon would be a very accurate description.

I’ve had the B.B. Pros and a B.B. 3. Trust me when I say those pickup hit the amp much harder than the TB+.

Thanks for posting the demo. It seems like you prefer the more percussive pick attack of the SSV+.
The thornbucker + sounds good, but I believe its qualities may come through better with a bit less saturation. IOW, less gain.

That makes me wonder if a compressor wouldn't solve alot of those issues. I know Pete Thorn uses one, and well, hotter pickups are more compressed. Problem is, I've never really learned how to properly use one. I've always relied on overdrives, hotter pickups, and high gain amps to keep my tone from getting too loose under high gain.

Maybe. I’m just not one of those guys what can burn on the clean channel. To me, that’s the key to these pickups. They are very clean feeling. They just don’t work for me. They may be perfect for you.

Re: Suhr Thornbucker+ set

Just to throw it out there: IME, what you describe reminds me a characteristic of Alnico IV pickups that I have perceived (which I believe these are). For me, it alsways felt that A4 pups have an almost stiffer feel than A2 or A5, for example. Always perplexing, because I loved the balanced EQ curve but the “feel” seemed strange.

Of course, this could be just my imagination and all in my head.
