Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

I came to a conclusion that I'll never own Sunn Model T due to it's rarity, high demand and insane prices so I started to look the other way around. I have stumbled upon 2 preamp pedals that are based on it's preamp.

First one is Correct Sound Custom's MT Tube Preamp and it costs $270. From an interview with Stephen O' Malley this one was build for him so he could play at the places where he can't get Model T's...

The other one is Electronic Audio Experiments Model FET and it's $220.

I'd like someone who has played the real thing give me some feedback. Do these pedals sound like a real thing? Is it worth spending money? From what I've heard MT tube preamp sounds much more like the original, I could be wrong...

Not sure if you've seen this, but I would be more inclined to try it. It's also much cheaper.

I don't think you'll get that close to making one amp sound like another by sticking the preamp in front of it. There's much more going on with the Sunn Model T sound than just the way the preamp distorts. I'd sooner go with a pedal that emulates the overall Sunn sound, like the Earthquaker.

i tend to agree. the eqd sounds like a cool pedal

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

I was thinking of going directly into Torpedo CAB with this since it has power amp and cab sims.

I know about Acapulco Gold...it's meh...sounds to trebly and lacks balls.

I have found a video of someone meddling with Model T and that MT Tube preamp comes really close:

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

What's silly is that I remember a time when you could buy a model T for $270.

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

There's a few Model T's on Ebay for not stupidly expensive prices. One is listed for $1100.

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

The model T preamp is really similar to a Marshall Superbass or Plexi or a Bassman or any of those similar vintage amps. What makes it unique is the 150w ultralinear power amp.

I'd get a decent, close-enough head for now and save your pennies for the real thing eventually. They're not any rarer or more expensive than similarly hyped vintage amps.

Silverface Bassman, Traynor YBA, Laney AOR, Peavey VTM120, Jet City JCA100. Most amps built in the 70s and 80s are basically Plexi circuits with a few tweaks.

That's what I was thinking when I opened this thread. Just buy a Model T, they're all over Ebay...holy hell what happened?

I still think a pedal like the Earthquaker into an amp with a beefy power section would get really close. Empty Pockets mentioned Traynor. That's where I'd look first.

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

I was JUST looking at the Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold Overdrive. It's totally based on the Sunn!!!

I'm starting to dig the idea of these amps.

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

I feel like i should say that everybody i know who owns a model T and an Acapulco Gold have said they do not sound similar. The pedal is a gnarly fuzzy overdrive which is similar to what you get when you boost a model T with a good dirt pedal, but a real model T is like a cranked Plexi or Bassman with a certain extra evilness in the low mids. They're not very gainy at all without a pedal, even when dimed. Source:

My model T has a little more gain than my Bassman and a little less than my Overdrive.

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

That stack...

I'm gonna get that MT tube preamp, to my ears sounds really close to a Model T. You can run this preamp in FX loop and just use power section of an amp you're running into. It's not gonna be 100% Model T but should be really close.

They just made a rack version of Model T and Beta Lead (same unit) and added some bassy goodness:

You can also hear this guy using MT thru Mesa Rectifier

Re: Sunn Model T (in a pedal)

I don't know about rackmount, but you've got me on the hook if you get believable beta lead and model T sounds in a pedal.
