Re: Sunn Model T

To be honest, I think that there are many amps could do "stoner" without flipping out and throwing "replica band" money at tones better created by newer offerings, numerous guitar and gears, and (gasp!) your own fingers.

Some of the other amps do sound promising. :smokin:

It's tough to get an idea of the model T's sound from most newer bands, because there's always a pedal in front. Most of the newer metal bands using them mate them up with a Rat, fwiw.

It's basically just a really loud, really thick sounding amp.

My amps sound awful without an OD pedal of some sort. The headroom is so high, all you ever get without a pedal is high-pressure farty blasts to the center of the ears. The projection is really un-usable. I would think the only way to stand it would be to use it with a super long cable, and play the guitar from the bathroom. The distortion without a pedal is not going to be there!

From my perspective, I always wondered other amps sounded thin, not that this amp was too thick with bass.

With a pedal, this amp blooms into the monster you hear/read about. It is best to think of this as a high-current amp that is missing a couple of early gain stages.

I don't think the Sunn model T is ONLY a super thick amp either. The presence control is wonderful for overall projection control, and no one should ever forget that the speakers/cab are enourmosly important...and likely more important with the dozens and dozens of choices available today.

Is Laney in the running too?

The old Laney AORs.....which are pretty similar to JCM800s from what I've been told.

Plus the Laney GH and VH series.
