Super Strat for Under $1000?

Re: Super Strat for Under $1000?

Look, I'll be the first one to tell you that your initial option fits your criteria WAY better than most stuff people here have recommended. Why go for a double locking bridge and block/tremel-no it when there's so many guitars out there with hardtail bridges? On top of that string changes are quicker with a traditional set up. No locking strings up, etc (even if with some practice it takes very little time).

Off the top of my head, the two guitars I feel you would like quite a bit are discontinued (considering you like Ibanez necks) but still findable. One was released last year as a limited edition, the Prestige RG1421F, and can be found somewhere in the vicinity of your budget.

The other one, which is IMO one of the best models Ibanez has released, was the RGA121. It was just this no non-sense Prestige hardtail mahogany/maple archtop shredstick. You can find those all the way from $400 to $1000 in various states. Another plus is that a lot of people who own them tend to be the ones that post in sevenstring.org so you'll find a lot of them already decked out with DiMarzio or Bareknuckle pickups.

That said, good luck!

Jackson SL3 with TOM?

I'm not sure offhand whether the SL3 comes in a TOM variant but US made SL1 and SL2h can be very close to $1000.

Seems like everything in my price range is MIJ, and a Fender won't get the job done for me. As for the Dreamcicle, it looks nice, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of buying something I haven't had any experience with. I suppose I can see Musician's Friend's return policies about that one.

To all the Block the Trem Replies:

I've looked into the tremol-no, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. I don't want it to be like a hardtail, I'm specifically looking for a hardtail. I recently pulled my old Epi G-400 out of the closet and now my LTD and my Jackson are sitting in that space while I wait for Emails from Craigslist. Hardtails are just more comfortable to me, and easier to deal with.

A Strat-type floating vibrato can be made almost entirely "dive-only" by installing extra springs and/or cranking down the claw.

Personally, I would look for an assembled Warmoth guitar on E-Bay, Strat style with 24 frets and hopefully a universal ("swimming pool") rout, and put a Super Vee vibrato in it. You will get a very good bang for the buck buying a Warmoth on the used market, rather than a low-to-mid-range factory-built shredder guitar. That vibrato is a modification, which I know you said you don't want to do, but it is about as harmless and simple a modification as there is for what it gives you in return. It's not a Floyd-like modification. The vibrato is expensive, but with your budget, and the deal you will get on a used Warmoth, you can just consider it part of the cost of the guitar.

My two cents.

I was thinking just ordering a custom from Warmoth, I wasn't too excited though when I saw the prices to have the body painted. I'll give Ebay a try, but I'm VERY picky when it comes to my guitars.
