Superstrat GAS

Hey guys, it's been a while since I had a strong rush of GAS but of course it always comes back. Right now I've got a huge craving for a single hum, neck thru, flat top, superstrat with a reverse headstock. Even though I've never owned a guitar with one, a floyd might be sweet too. I don't know how familiar a lot of you guys are with Chimaira but for those that are think of Rob Arnold's custom ESP's.

There are obvious options right off the bat, ESP, Jackson, Charvel, Kramer, but I want to hear what kind of suggestions would be floating around your guys' minds. The type of pickup doesn't really matter because I plan on putting an EMG 81 in it anyways. (if it comes with one, bonus) The final stipulation is that whatever it is, no matter how beat up or poorly treated, it has to have a decent fretboard and she's gotta be cheap. I'll be selling off a guitar in the near future so hopefully I can cover costs with that.

Thanks for readin,
Bryan

Look at

You can get the reverse headstock option.
Pointy headstock option as well (like on the Ultra V re-issue).

Used USA Jackson Soloist or early 90's MIJ Soloist Pro.

Re: Superstrat GAS

I'm not going to try to steer you away from a Jackson or Charvel by any means if you can find one in your price range. You can find some of the Japanese ones pretty cheap used.

Another option to consider, if you don't have to have the Floyd, is a Peavey Predator. You can get them dirt cheap and they're great guitars. You can do tons of stuff to it before you spend as much as you would on a lot of the more popular guitars.

Is there a Godin that fits what you're looking for? They're not too expensive here, so I'm sure there not bad up there.

Finally, I can't let all these people post guitar pics without showing off my own. :D

Re: Superstrat GAS

Oh yeah. I saw that one in a recent Musician's Friend catalog. Prestige craftsmanship, great looks, and one Full Shred at the bridge. That is so cool.

SwedeNuck, if you're looking to get one cheap, there are a lot of options. There are a lot of decent Korean shredders made by Ibanez, Schecter, Jackson, etc now.

There are also a lot of older shredders on the used market. Some of the ones from the 80's are decent. Some are complete dogs. Some companies were putting no name trem units on their guitars that failed, no replacement parts out there, or they never worked to begin with.
Some decent used shredders that are worth looking at are some of the Peavey models, 80's B C Rich NJ Series (I had an NJ Series super Strat for a while, and it was a VERY well built guitar), ESP, Ibanez, Carvin, maybe Fernandes.

Yamaha and Washburn had a few high end shredders that were decent. I don't think I'd take a chance on one of their lower down the line models though.

If you really luck out, you might find a high quality USA made shredder for cheap! People couldn't give them away in the 90's, but they've climbed in value since then. I regret passing up one or two deals on fine American shredder guitars for dirt cheap in the 90's. I think 80's American Kramer Baretta's can still be found pretty cheap.

Deals are out there. I got a used USA Robin Medley for $350 a couple of years ago. And a Kramer American Stagemaster arch top for $450. Both look great too. They're not beaters. I've scored a few USA Hamer shredders for under $400.

Re: Superstrat GAS

Two words: Hamer Chaparral. The US chaps can still be had at reasonable prices on ebay, snap one up before the prices go crazy like they have for the Hamer Californians! I'm very very happy w/ my 88 Chap!!

Re: Superstrat GAS

XSSIVE - Clone Guitars....never played one, never heard one, but I damn sure love the way his look. A few dudes have bought some from him. Holler at him. By the way (and I apologize) I didn't even read what you wrote. I just saw the title and thought of Mikey Mike.

Re: Superstrat GAS

OH man I just saw Chimiara at verizion wireless at houston in march. That thing was sick. Classic strat body, but reverse ESP headstock. His tone was huge and the solos were amazing. Chimaira had the best tone that night and thats saying alot since they played with dragonforce, he is legend and killswitch engage.

I'd look at some ESPs if I were you bro.

Re: Superstrat GAS

Thanks for the input guys, I'll keep my eyes peeled for now but I may just have to take this opportunity to start a long overdue project. I've been meaning to make a guitar from scratch for years with nothing but some primitive tools and some elbow grease. I know carvin sells them but does anyone here know where else neck thru body neck blanks can be had?

Re: Superstrat GAS

Pierre!!!! That Kramer is awesome. The guitarplayer from Pretty Maids had one in White, back in '87.

Could I buy yours? :D

Re: Superstrat GAS

Hehehehe it's my best guitar and the best I ever played.

No.

:D

They're cheap on the 2nd hand market bro though. Even in Europe. Mine came up to about...500 euros with case, customs and its price factored in. I got it from the US.
