Supposed marshall 80's quad with 70's speakers...what you think? (ebay)

Re: Supposed marshall 80's quad with 70's speakers...what you think? (ebay)

I believe his claim...Greenbacks are much warmer with good chunky low mids compared to the more nasally, tighter 75s or V30s...and then there is the fact they are 30 somethin years old which I'm sure tamed some of the super high end sizzle GBs have.

Not to mention mention marshall cab quality started to fade in the late 80s/early 90s.

Mid 70s GBs, and the BB's are my fave celestions.

Greenbacks and G12h speakers are my favorite mix for Marshall cabinets. I am not real savy on date codes, but if those are from the 70s then they will probably sound great.. very marshally for sure. This appears to be a great setup for classic marshall tone.

Nice new tolex. It looks pretty clean for a JCM800 cabinet.

My 77-ish cab has Blackbacks, and I love that cab!

Didn't they start putting G12-65s in some of there cabinets in the late seventies?

I had an 81 or 82 JCM800 and it had the 65s so it's possible they started that in the 70s.

Those G12M's are pre-73, definately great sounding speakers.

Yes, the 25's were the standard Marshall 1960 4x12 speaker from 1968 to 1978. The 65's superceded the 25's in the 78-79 period. Some of the 70's 25's had greenbacks, some blackbacks, some odd colors. The pre 73 25's were probably better, but the later ones are still not bad, by any means. G12H30's were the standard speaker in the heavy duty boxes (model # 1982) during this period.

hmmm i wanted to sell an amp of mine so i could get a 212 cabinet for easier transportation than my engl 412 (cos its so heavy)...but this is very tempting...the marshall cabs arent that heavy are they?

One more thing...is this one of the "basketweave" cabinets or is it just a standard marshall thing...excuse my ignorance, i dont know much about marshall stuff :smack:

Re: Supposed marshall 80's quad with 70's speakers...what you think? (ebay)

It's not a basket-weave. Basket-weave is totally cool looking though.

Re: Supposed marshall 80's quad with 70's speakers...what you think? (ebay)

Would it be hard to change the cloth to a basket-weave? Or wouldn't it be worth it? This is just based on my remembering that basket weave cabs sound better somehow because of the cloth weave and how it filters certain frequencies...feel free to tell me if this is total crap!

Re: Supposed marshall 80's quad with 70's speakers...what you think? (ebay)

The tan colored basket weaves are from the years 68-69. They do filter out unwanted highs. The 70's checkered grill clothes don't filter out highs like the basket weaves, but they are not sonicly nuetral like the typical modern black grill clothes in use from the JCM800 years up. You can change the grill cloth to a more vintage material sourced from some place like Antique Electronics, but it's a big job. It's probably easier to just use beam blockers or something...
