Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

I love MIJ Fenders. They are, without fail, excellent guitars. So, when I saw this fine specimen on Craigslist for $375 with hard case, I really had no choice.

She's a 72RI Strat. Her serial number puts her at 1988-89 for year of manufacture, which is right in the prime era of Fender Japan. It's a simple, well-built, great-sounding instrument.

It does have a few war wounds, but those don't really bother me. I have big plans for this beauty. Oh yes.

You see, folks, as nice as this guitar is, I'm not a big fan of the neck. The 68 and 72 reissue necks are quite thin for my taste. I'm also not too keen on the CBS headstock, but I'd be willing to get past that if the neck profile felt good to me.

It's kind of a shame, because the neck itself is BEAUTIFUL. There's a sweet subtle flame all along it.

I'm sure it will make someone else very happy. As for me, I have my eye on something else. I won't reveal what because I don't want anyone here to pounce on it ;)

The plan I have is to convert it to more of an early 60's Strat. The neck swap will get me most of the way there, plus I have some pickups already on the way for it. All that's left after that will be a mint pickguard and some cream knobs and covers. I'll have an outstanding vintage-style Strat for under seven bills when it's all said and done.

Enjoy two more pics showcasing the beefy trem block (I will be going to three springs) and a closer view of the war wounds. The crack is on the finish only, by the way.

I will post progress pics and notes about this project as it happens.

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

If the frets are in decent condition... I wouldn't mind getting that neck. Since I am such a sweet heart I know you'd give me a good deal... plus you aren't a deadbeat and I know you'd be a good trader.

Would it fit on a modern strat?

is there issues coming from a 22 fret neck to a 21 fret?

Frets are in very good shape, and look like they were recently re-crowned. It should fit on any American, Mexican, or Japanese Strat. How tight or loose it fits depends on your body, but it won't be off by more than a couple mm.

22 to 21 should be no problem, since most 22 fret Fender necks just have the last fret on a "balcony" that sits on top of the body. 21 fret necks end right at the butt. If your neck has the 22nd fret balcony, it's cool.

Be warned, being a 72RI it has a three bolt neck plate. It's not a big deal to convert it to four bolt - just drill a couple holes. Also, be advised it is a vintage style neck, which means narrow frets and 7.25" radius.

I might be trading it for the other neck, but if that doesn't work out you have dibs.

Cool?

For reference, I went from a 22 fret Fender American Standard neck to a 21 fret Fender Road Worn neck on my Stratocaster, and they both fit perfectly.

I've never seen just Fender on the headstock like that...is that changed? Or is it an MIJ thing?

A lot of the MIJ's from the 80's have just the logo. I've seen at least four other MIJ Strats like this. I have no idea why they did that.

My MIJ Tele has the spaghetti logo with "TELECASTER" (including the quotes) underneath.

I'm guessing the Japanese just did whatever they wanted re. logos.

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Another Lefty, its amazing how many are out there!!!

Its funny about the neck....I've actually grown to prefer that size/shape over the regular. I'm putting together a kit tele which I'll probably stick a '72 RI tele deluxe neck in to. That has the larger headstock on it, and in a small nod to hendrix it will be a RH neck on LH body.

BTW - the cream looks fantastic!! Would be great with a maple fretboard in aged laquer but with modern FB radius

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Mmm, lefty NGDs are just extra sweet.

Especially this one. That thing looks awesome, dude. Congrats and enjoy.

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Nice guitar, however I'd be inclined to say that the crack isn't a finish crack only. Look at the way it runs with the grain from the block, almost at the place where one of the pieces of wood might be conjoined.
Either way its a nice guitar for the price, specially up there in Canada, the dry land of Ginger Ale. I bet its hard to find good lefty's.
Just inject some glue into that crack with a Stew Mac needle and Clamp it and she'll be good to go. Otherwise it might continue to seperate.

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

I really like the look of black pickups/knobs on white 3ply guard. My sunburst strat has that look now. Go with whatever pickups you like, but keep that white/black look. It's a good look on the aged blonde finish.

Nope ... I'm going with parchment pickups and knobs for a true vintage Strat look. :)

I've already got the black on white look with my lake placid blue Strat.

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Sweet axe, ever consider a red or tortiseshell pickguard? I think that would bring out the color....

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

すてきな色だよね。おめでとう!日本のギターはすごいなのだ!

Even if you don't understand japanese, your guitar will. Anyways, congrats!

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Sweet axe!

Those MIJ Strats are the bomb but you are right baout the necks...I had a 68ri MIJ Strat, LOVED the guitar HATED the neck...very thin and narrow!

Good luck with it.
