Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

Very Nice score RD!

I don't understand the necks on these MIJ reissues either, cos the actual early 70s models I've played had these big U shaped monstrosities (and I mean that in a good way). The MIM 70s reissues have got it fairly right.

Thanks. The good news is it's only the 68 and 72 reissues from Japan that have the pool cue necks. Also, the more I play on it the more I find it's not that bad. I'd definitely prefer a fatter neck, but I can certainly live with this one.

Late to the party as usual, but wanted to add belated NGD congrats! Love the Creamy mojo!

I kinda like the big headstocks (they're groovy), but if the neck pofile isn't to your liking, its gotta go....(i'd go HWY 1 with the neck)

Should be some guitar after your planned tweaks.....CONGRATS!

Big update! Check out what I just won!

1984 Fender MIJ 62RI Strat neck, with some light wear. A perfect match for this guitar.

So, between that, the pickups I have on the way, and the aged white plastic parts kit I bought on the weekend, I'm very very close to having my pre-CBS clone come together. All I need now are some split shaft Klusons and a set of stamped saddles and I'm all set.

Holla!

It's a nice neck and congrats!

But I don't *think* thats a 62 reissue neck??? they had the kluson tuners, and a different headstock logo (thats a 70s style logo)???

If we were talking about MIA reissues, then you'd be right. MIJ reissues are all over the place in terms of logos. Some have klusons, some have Gotohs like this, some have the solid black logo, some have the silver logo, some have the spaghetti logo ... it's pretty hard to keep up with.

It's also quite possible that the tuners were "upgraded" at some point.

The features that tell me this is a 62RI are:

- rosewood board
- pre-CBS headstock
- 7.25" radius
- vintage size frets
- big C back contour
- heel adjust truss rod
- vintage tint finish

The 62RI was the only MIJ Fender that had those features on the neck.

Nice score, my 50's MIJ ri is one of the best strats I've ever played so I imagine yours is just as rockin. I dig the fat neck on mine though

Mannn that hot rail's gotta go, though!

Don't worry ... the Hot Rails is gone as soon as my latest shipment of pickups comes in. I think you'll like what I'm putting in there.

Re: Surprise NGD: Creamy Fender Goodness

The project is starting to come together. In addition to the new neck, I have (or have lined up) the following:

- SSL-1\SSL-1\SSL-5 set. I could have gone strict vintage I suppose, but I like the idea of a fatter bridge pickup. My other two Strats have humbuckers in the bridge, and this is my idea of a compromise between that and pure vintage spec.

- aged white pickup covers, knobs, and switch tip

- stamped steel saddles

- four bolt neck plate and screws

- replacement nut

That leaves split shaft Klusons. I'm trying to find a used set but it's probably not gonna happen.
