sustain

my jazzmaster has really weak sustain. probably the worst i've experienced. it's an alder body. i'm considering the mastery bridge to improve it. it's damn expensive. is sustain a common issue with modern jazzmasters? the pickups are currently quite high too. so i think i'll lower them if it will help.

in contrast my G&L has great sustain with the locked bridge, ash body and maple neck. when i play it the body and neck resonate. the jazzmaster doesn't have near as much resonance, which may help the sustain-i think.

Re: sustain

There can be a ton of factors but pickup height is the first thing id try. If the magnet is too close to the strings, the magnetic field will actually reduce the movement of the strings and sometimes even pull them out of tune. Definitely something to look at.

Re: sustain

I'd have a look at the neck pocket first.

And exchange the neck for a random strat neck as an experiment.
