Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

Hi there!

I have a question for all sustainer users, either Fernendez or sustainiac.
I bought the Sustainiac and send it to install it on my Godin Xtsa. My bridge pickup is a TB-4, so it is totally 'compatible'.

this is the problem i have with the sustainiac: It works fine, but it is not even. The G string has much more intensity than the others. I have the intensity pot, but that happens at any level. Alan Hoover (owner of sustainiac) told me it is because the more the mass, the more effect the sustainer has. Makes sense, since the is the thickest of the 3 flats strings.
But when I see videos of people with sustainer, i do not 'see or hear' that.
Does it happen to you?

Alan also told me I can lower the pole of the G string of the Bridge PU. I think that is wrong, since that would give uneven pickup output when the sustainer is off.

The other problem I have is when used in 'fundamental' mode (no harmonic).
When I play hi notes on the Hi E string, the notes do not sustain in the fundamental mode, but start to sound their octaves/fifths. Once again, this is with the fundamental mode.

Do you think my sustainer is malfunctioning? Is this normal? How does it work for you?

Thank you very much for your responses!

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

Good luck with this, I don't think anyone here has a Sustainiac. I fancy one myself though.

Hey man, I've had a sustainiac in a Jackson, and it didn't have the problem you've described. If you can't find anything on the sustainiac website, maybe try adjusting the polepieces on the bridge pickup. I'm not sure it'll help, but it might

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

thank you dude!
Maybe it is not so obvious with amp. Try muting the amp and the gutiar itself. Again, the sustainiac works fine, but the effect is mucho more pronounced on the G string. And the higher noted on the E tend to behave like in the 'harmnic mode' , jumping octave/ fifth.

Thanks

Got one.. does the same thing. Once you learn how it works then you make music with what you have.

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

I've had a few :). You could try adjusting the trim pot on the actual Sustainiac circuit board. I'm not sure if that's what you meant by "intensity control", so maybe you've tried that already?

Some strings (and fret positions) on mine just work better that others. This is normal, just like when you get normally occurring amp feedback, some notes work better than others.

Sometimes if the inside trim pot is too hot the notes will jump into a harmonic rather than a fundamental.

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

thanks again.

My sustainiec is the model that has intensity control pot, not like a model of fernandez that is fixed in the board.

If I lower the Polepiece of the Bridge pickup, so that the input of the sustainac has less input on the G string (the one that as the most sustain effect), it can compensate what I describe, but also the pickups will sound weaker on that string and I do not want that.

But waht u say that is a common probolem with sustainers.

I read a lot before buying the sustainac, but seems that fernandez is more 'Flat and even" .I never tried one, but that is what I perceive in the videos I saw on youtube.

thanks

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

hey there. Thanks for the phone. I emailed the guy. I do not wanna be picky and repetitive. But as I said, It was an "Observation" an the things doesn't work "bad". Just uneven, and when I here 'sustainer' guys like Vai or youtube videos, I see/hear/perceive a different behavior.....more like an even thing across the fingerboard. Here, the G sustains with MUCH more intensity, to an extent that I feel the string resonating. And Hi notes sustain less and seem to be week, that is why probably the jump in octave.

It seems that is he way it works, though.

Thanxs

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

Have you tried a light wound G? I hate plain G strings, because they always ring louder than other strings.

Re: Sustainer Question (fernendez/ sustainiac)

i use the most common strings : Ernie Ball super slinky 9-42
