Thanks

Re: Svetlana Winged C 6L6GC's

that looks like Sovtek writing ... I'll be back with a blurb about both tubes from Lord Valve ...
---------------
REFLEKTOR PRODUCTION SVETLANA 6L6GC
The newest entry in Mike Matthews' Svetlana line, this is
a *very* good tube. I had ten samples which I gave away
to various customers - four pairs and two singles - and
of the six people who got the samples, five thought they
were dynamite and one thought they were "OK." The dude
who thought they were "OK" is my assistant bench tech here
at NBS Electronics, Scooter Barnes. He ran them in two
Boogies and two Fenders, and preferred them in the Fenders.
Scooter likes the JJ 6L6s better than anything besides the
NOS Philips JAN 7581As in his Boogies, but he thought these
Svetlanas had the edge in his Fenders. I'll be sending
samples of this tube (and several other currently produced
6L6s) to Derek Trucks for evaluation - we're looking down
the road for something to use when the supply of NOS 7581As
is exhausted - and it'll be interesting to get Derek's take
on them. No field reliability reports yet - look for more
info in the next set of catalogs.
UPDATE 01/01/05 - Field reliability reports are in, and
these tubes *rock* in that department. *Very* hard to
kill. I am now using these exclusively in my repair
department, as they are the among the best-sounding and
longest-lasting current-production 6L6s in my inventory.
---------------------------------------------

SED 6L6GC (FORMERLY "SVETLANA" - PLEASE SEE UPDATE BELOW)
This is a good-sounding, reliable tube that delivers high
output when used in Twin and Super Reverbs. These have
received many favorable reviews in the guitar magazines.
The SED 6L6GC is a very rugged, well-constructed item, and
offers wide dynamic range and great low end. SED designed
this tube with guitar amps in mind; it's designed to burn
base-up and operate reliably. Excellent in any 6L6
application; in my opinion, easily one of the best currently
produced 6L6s. If you don't want to shake loose the bread
for NOS 7581As (but want most of the tone) this is the one
to go with.
UPDATE 09/28/03 - This tube is shipping in the new-style "SED"
boxes, and bears the "flying C" logo. It's produced in the same
factory by the same people using the same materials as always,
only now it has a different logo on it. Due to legal concerns,
the name "Svetlana" is now used only on certain tubes produced
in the Reflektor plant, and marketed in the USA by Mike Matthews
(New Sensor). The "SED" tubes are the ones from St. Petersburg,
formerly sold in the USA as "Svetlana."
UPDATE 01/01/05 - I'm seeing some buzz on the Net regarding a
lawsuit filed by CE Distribution LLC against New Sensor regarding
the use of the "Svetlana" badge in the USA. Preliminary reports
are that judgement was rendered in favor of CE, so the whole
"Svetlana" logo controversy may STILL not be fully resolved.
For my part, I don't really give a rat's ass what's printed
on the bottles, I just care if they kick ass in guitar amps.
Stay tuned for further developments in the continuing Svetlana
Soap Opera. I'll do my best to make sure that my customers
know which tube is which, and what to call them to get the
ones they're looking for when they order. (Sheesh!) Also,
be aware that production at the SED factory has been *extremely*
spotty lately, and supplies are limited on any SED products.
I had scheduled shipments of these which did not arrive, but
I have enough back stock to keep up with demand in most cases.
The availability situation is improving, but slowly.

sorry, I don't have any pics ... for that, try antique electronic supply

Thanks! that really filled in the background for me!
I've seen a few Svetlana 6l6's on ebay in which the seller says that they are original from the factory in st. petersburg, and i've heard a lot of good things about the tubes, but i think i'll just go with the JJ's.

Re: Svetlana Winged C 6L6GC's

since Sovtek bought the Svetlana name, it's caused a lot of confusion ... that's probably the basis of the lawsuit

Re: Svetlana Winged C 6L6GC's

In Peavey's, which I recall you having, I prefer EH 6L6's.

Re: Svetlana Winged C 6L6GC's

Just make sure he tells you they're new, and haven't been used, ever.
I really like the =C= Svetlana 6L6's. To me, they're just a touch warmer and more compressed than JJ 6L6's. I like JJ EL-34's because they compress less than Svets, which I like for EL-34's.
I like Svet 6L6's because they compress more than JJ's, which is what I prefer for those.

why Electro Harmonix? i've just recently scored a used 5150 head off ebay, and its got 4 sovtec 6l6's and 4 sovtek 12ax7's and a 12ax7eh in the V1 position. I swapped the JJ tubes from my 5150 combo into it, and it really made ae difference. I really like JJ tubes for 12ax7's, since bob balances and grades one of them for the phase inverter.

also, do you find your XXX is a lot better at 60 watts?

could you define compressed? do you mean less dynamic? would the only time you hear that be at louder volumes, since its the power tubes?

I found Electro Harmonix to be very very harmonically rich, and it gets a nice thick yet somewhat spongy brown sound, in a very good way. I hated the JJ Pre's I tried, they halfed the gain and made the amp dull. They weren't high gain graded, though.

Yes, I love it alot more at half power. I usually play it at 3-4, so it works the powertubes more at 60 watts. It also halves the cost of power tubes.
