swamp ash vs alder?

Re: swamp ash vs alder?

I have a Jazzmaster made of roasted swamp ash. Now you all are forcing me into making another one out of alder so I can compare. Then, of course, I have to have one that isn't roasted so the comparison is a true one. Darnn, this forum can be expensive. :D

Re: swamp ash vs alder?

I have G&L Legacys with both swamp ash and alder. Same neck woods, same pickups.

I find the ash tone is less dynamic, more focused, rounder, sustaining. The alder is more open, airy and with more dynamic range.

For the most part, I have no preference, except for one song that my band does that I prefer using an alder guitar for a more acoustic guitar-like tone. As for the rest of the material, they are interchangeable.

Re: swamp ash vs alder?

He would have had to have either 2 completely different necks, or he compared 2 separate guitars. Either way the fretboard was not the only difference.....and hence it is not a viable conclusion to make as there was more than 1 variable contributing to the difference.

As to your question......jazz is as variable in tone as rock. And its the player that makes it jazz not the guitar.

That's true, i agreed with the player make the jazz sound. My question is more to the guitar tone, if i can get dark fat enough sound with that wood composition that would be helpful. Thanks.
