Re: Swapping Magnets on Cheap(er) Import P-90s?
Done it a few times myself. A single coil isn't as easy for a manufacturer to screw up as a HB is, so if you're on a budget, it's worth swapping mags. The material quality and windings are always important, but with a P-90, it has 4 times the magnet influence than a HB (2 magnets per coil, vs 1/2 magnet per coil) so you can do more by tweaking them. You'll get a more articulate tone with high quality American or European PU's, but experiment with these if you want to keep costs down.
You can try pairing up different magnets and should be able to dial in your tone fairly well. Alnicos will give you more color & flavor than ceramics. Just remember the twin magnets are positioned so that they repel.
Let us know how it works out.
