Sweet EVH NGD

Phantasmagoria

watch where you point that sabre
What can I say, I can't resist an 'erotic' guitar...

I saw this at the store and it gave me instant GAS...love that it's so simple understated and classy looking (to me)

After playing it for a bit I ended up walking out with it ...sounded and played fantastic! I've had my eye on the Wolfgang's for quite a while now and always knew it was only going to be a matter of time :lmao:

Short test ride from earlier this morning..

Came setup perfectly..not the slightest issue with anything. Really plays like a dream & sounds amazing! The neck pup is areal treat as well... (coming soon :D) :bigthumb:

One thing it does need pretty badly is a change of strings though. The ones on it atm look/feel cruddy and are pretty much dead..

Thanks man! Just put on a set of new strings and the high E broke. It's lovely when that happens :poed: Turns out the intonations badly off as well..screws were all loose. Damn, I hate intonating Floyds :grumble:

I've always wanted one of the hardtail ones. They neck profiles on those are fantastic. Truly high-performance guitars.

Too bad if you don't like the pickups, you're pretty much stuck with those. The routes are very specific to those.

Yup, that's the same one I bought, Only changes I made to it were 15 nF tone cap and an A3 in the neck pickup.

It's definitely a very nice guitar.

Nice! It's definitely a player :bigthumb:

I think once I get the intonation fixed up this thing will sing..it sustains for days & has a nice woody tone ..especially the neck pup. The bridge is slightly brighter than I would consider ideal, but still pretty sweet. What cap value does it come with? I have .047uf and occasionally .022 uf in all my axes, never tried 15 nf. What made you pick that value & how would you say it sounds better than stock?

I was thinking of putting a NOS Russian .047uf PIO cap in there to get a slightly spongier feel for the bridge pup (for tapping :p). Though the new strings may have helped with that already. Still have'nt plugged it in after the string change. It's still missing the high E string..

It comes with a 22 nF (or 0.022uF, if you like hitting zero a few more times), all 15 nF does it allow a little more mids to get through when you turn the tone down. It's a subtle change if you don't use your tone control that much, but on my wolfgang the bridge I tend to use the tone at least halfway down, the upgrade makes it so it doesn't completely turn to mud below 4 or 5 on the knob. I chose the value because I accidentally took one home from work in my pocket and thought it would be a cool experiment.

From what you're saying it looks like you like bigger caps, but I'm even thinking of going down to 10 nF myself.

Yeah well I "might" swap out what's in there for the PIO ones I have ..lets see. It actually sounds just fine the way it is after setting the intonation & changing the strings though I'm still missing a bit of that soft compression I get from my usual .047uf caps. I'm not a great one for fiddling with my volume or tone controls when I'm playing ..always have them all the way up, though I'm pretty sure tone caps do make a difference even then.

New strings & proper intonation...

Going direct with my Vox Cutting edge pedal.

once again w/ the pickup selector in the centre position (neck & bridge)..used my little Zoom G1X Four modeler for this one..

I bought my first evh one year ago. A wolfgang special brand new. I was so excited and happy that I bought a wolfgang standard shortly after. They seem the same guitar but they actually don't. The neck are slightly different and the quartsaw maple gives a brighter sound to the guitar. The contoured body of the standard is a pleasure to play. The floyd is a pain, yes, much more with the d tuna. But I can't be more satisfied

Mine's actually fairly dark, even with a baked, reinforced maple neck. A lot of high mids, but not a lot of treble. This is part of what makes a higher corner frequency more useful to me on this one.

Sweet! I saw a couple of the specials at the store too but when I looked at the price ages I left them alone :lmao:

This one's a nice guitar for the price. Plays well, feels good, sounds killer.... yeah the Floyd is a PIA to set up and it takes many tunings & retuning's until you can get it stable but when it is..it works just fine and holds perfect tune.

Having said that I still do much prefer recessed Floyds. The neck on this guitar feels great imo. The whole guitar has a very reassuring, solid, sturdy kinda feel to it ...it's fun to play and sounds great. The only thing I might do is swap in some .047 PIO caps. Not that the Guitar is bright at all, I'd say it's pretty well balanced across the spectrum ....it's just that for me personally I'm used to those caps and it gives me a feel I'm familiar with & like..a little more "squish" to the notes..

I think mine's pretty evenly balanced. There's the right amount of everything....switching to the bigger caps (if I do it) will just be a matter of familiar feel/personal preference..or I could just get used to the slight difference and rock out with this the way it is :bigthumb:

You know I was thinking that slightly "harder-edged" feel it has to it could also be because of the way the pups are mounted. I have other guitars with 'direct-mounted' pup's, but these are literally screwed in to the top of the guitar w/ two screws on each side of the pup's legs, no springs at all, so it looks like they can't be adjusted..

There is a very small amount of adjustment range. Beneath the pickup is about a quarter inch of foam, so you can lower them a little bit or raise them a little bit less.
