Which Duncan Tele bridge pickup would you consider having the sweetest clean sound?

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

People here have often mentioned the JD.

I've used the Quarter Pounder and Broadcaster. I like them both, but I wouldn't call them sweet.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

I have and always will contend that the JD is the sweetest tele pup out there. I just unplugged a few minutes ago and thought to myself again, that I can't believe how great that guitar sounds.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

Do you mean "sweet" like smooth, even or

like "Dude this is a "sweet" pickup it Rawks so hard!

cheers! JIMO

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

I think by the term sweet i probably mean less ice picky, more round tone....i'm using a 5/2 in there at the moment but it seems a bit harsh in the guitar i'm using it in, although i believe the 5/2 shouldn't really be that bright. In this guitar i'm using a mini humbucker in the neck a 5/2 for strat in the middle and the 5/2 in the bridge, when i switch to the bridge alone there's quite a stark brightness and fatness difference between that mid pup and the bridge, i'm thinking of wiring the tone control just on the bridge pup, if thats possible?
ok on the JD, is the APTL1 another possibility?

JD! Great pickup, one of the best blackguard pickups out there.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

OK Thanks.....
I think i'll try the Jerry Donahue pickup, i notice its quite overwound does that not produce a brighter sound or do the magnets used counteract that effect?

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

Like Broadcasters, JD is wound with #43 wire, not #42. Thus, 7.50-80K isn't that dull. In fact, I think with a5 magnets it'll be very similar with a Broadcaster. The a2s round the highs, and that pickup has a lot of soft clarity. It also has a very nice spank to it, it twangs but softer.

I think it is one of the best tele pickups (including boutiques) out there.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

As the good doctor said, the JD (I have them in two guitars - and it's the only Tele bridge pickup I use) is a bit over-wound, but with it's alnico 2 magnets and 43 Ga wire, it's definitely the sweetest Tele bridge pickup.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

I'd say the JD has a really smooth character to its upper mid range that can otherwise be harsh. Even a quick listen to the soundclips on the main site make this pretty evident, so have a listen to confirm that this is what you mean by sweet sounding.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

OK Thanks, i've just downloaded the clips and taken them down to the studio and run them on some decent monitors rather than headphones, i see what you mean. The APTL1 does sound less harsh?
Where i'm coming from with all this.....i have a repro Japanese 72 custom and the bridge pickup sounds really nice not harsh, i was trying to get something near to that sound......the DC resistance seems to be about 5.8k. Its not a pickup you can purchase on its own.
Thanks for everyones help.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

Sorry I was off for awhile, but to clarify: By saying "sweet" I do mean that it's incredible and rawks! But really, I mean that it doesn't have the harshness and brightness that the other a5 tele pickups do. It has a nice mellow top end that is very smooth, while maintaining the crispness and tightness in the lows that we love in teles.

It responds very well with clean amps as well as driven amps.

I recently picked up a Zendrive and have had a lot of fun with my JD-loaded tele and that pedal w/my Blues Jr.

Seriously, you won't go wrong with this pup. You just won't.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

Primary difference between the JD and "other" Tele pickups is the JD has less icepicky attack and has a well balance midrange. IMHO its the best Tele bridge pickup out there.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

I assume it's 42 wire, Jeremy? If so, that and Alnico 2 makes it the cream of the crop for Seymour's Tele bridge line, assuming it's a decent wind, and I'm sure it is.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

I love Seymour's products and I love the JD, but to me, the best tele lead pickup I ever played is an old MIJ Fender unit that Zhang rewound to his Paul Bunyan specs.

Re: Sweetest Duncan Tele Bridge Pickup?

Must I be the voice of reason and remind folks of the Hot Stack Tele Lead ? Sheeesh. It fits all of thhe above definitions of "sweet".
