I'll have a set of ZW EMG's for my schecter next saturday woo! The thing I've kinda hated about EMG's is the absolute brittle bright harsh sound with an EMG in the bridge when u go above the d strings. What's your opinions on switching the EMG's so it's 85 bridge and 81 neck? What kind of sound sohuld I expect? I will also be doing the 18 volt mod if I can.

Re: Switch the ZW EMG's?

im picking up my flying v today, i got the zw set put in. i wanted to get an 85/60 set, because the 85 isnt as harsh sounding to me as the 81, and i heard the 60 sounds great shredding and clean. i dont know how the 81 sounds in the neck though. but since the emgs have the quick connect you can check this real easy. maybe ill try that this week and let you know how it sounds.

Re: Switch the ZW EMG's?

I've tried the 81 in the neck and didn't like it at all. IMO it just doesn't sound right as a neck pup,it's just not full and smooth enough for me. Put a 85 or 89(89 for more soundoptions) in the bridge(or stay with the 81,it does a good job in the bridge) and then get 60 for the neck(my absolute favorite considering neck buckers).

Re: Switch the ZW EMG's?

Most definitely put the 85 in the bridge, no matter what. I'm actually going to be getting a ZW set whenever I can get a ride down to GC, too.

That said, I love the 81 in the neck, but will probably trade it for a 60 later on, so I don't have two guitars with the same setup.

Re: Switch the ZW EMG's?

I agree, 85 in the bridge is killer, as is a 60 in the neck.

*Cough* It's what I use... *Cough*

Re: Switch the ZW EMG's?

You could go double up and just go 85/85 ala Bjorn Gellote of In Flames. I agree about the 85 in the bridge as well. I just did the 18 volt mod(finally) I don't know even why I waited!! Wow!
