Switch to undo PG mod

I flipped the magnet in my neck pickup to get that 'Greeny blues' tone. I love it, and want to keep it. But, I want the versatility to turn it off. I have used a guitar that could be put OOP electrically with a switch (close sound, but not the same) and wonder if I can use a similar wiring for a switch to put my magnetically out-of-phase pickup back in phase.

welcome to the forum!

no. there is no way to use any type of switch to flip magnetic polarity.

if you want the option to be in phase and out of phase you need to flip the mag then put in a switch to make the pups electrically out of phase.

Re: Switch to undo PG mod

I think I understand. But to be clear, if the magnetic polarity is reversed, switching the electrical current can not put the pickups back in phase. right?
So, would putting a phase switch on this guitar make any sonic difference?

Re: Switch to undo PG mod

putting a switch in will make a difference. youll be out of phase twice so you'll be in phase but with hum. not something you probably want to do. i did it in a guitar and it was much more noisy than a strat without a rw/rp middle pup

Re: Switch to undo PG mod

Ahh, of course. It would take out the humbucking ability. Very helpful. I'm glad I came here to ask before messing with it.

Re: Switch to undo PG mod

Switching the phase of the whole pickup doesn't disable it's humbucking just because it's got a flipped magnet. You don't need to flip the magnet to use a whole-pickup phase reverse switch with a humbucker. Single coils are another story, of course.

There's no practical way to change magnetic polarity on the fly, jeremy nailed that part.
