Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Looking at changing over from a 5-way switch to a 3-way, (huhuh, threeway) and need to know - does cost make much of a difference? They all look so damn similar. Is there a point where I would be paying too much?

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

That's about the price I was looking at, but then I see the same for sale at about half that and it begged the question.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I sometimes notice a difference in the quality of electronics, either how they operate or sound. I'm not going to spend $40 for a fender treble bleed when the part(s) is only $1, but I don't mind paying $12 for a fender switch instead of $6 if it could be higher quality.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Switches take a bit of abuse. On import guitars its the switch and jack that go first generally. The CRL or switchcraft used on the USA level guitars lasts way longer.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Don't waste your money on expensive switches. Even those cheapo found on yes...imports (again)...last for years. I am speaking from experience. I have an Epiphone LP from 2005 and a Kramer LP from 2006. More than 10 years and the switches are still strong.

http://www.mojotone.com/s.nl/it.A/id.38327/.f These are cheap and good, $7. In fact, plenty of more expensive switches are just rebranded versions of these.

Never pay anything more than $15 for them unless they provide some kind of nice easy wiring conveniences, like the Schaller Megaswitch I don't mind paying $25 for just because it really saves you the hassle of having to jumper the lugs on an equally expensive 5-way-superswitch.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I've never had a problem with a cheap switch... IMO they're plenty good enough.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I usually avoid the super cheap stuff, since it's all fairly low cost to begin with. More from a reliability standpoint, absolute 0 difference in tone.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Thanks for the advice, only the US>AU exchange rate can screw me now!

Funny, none of the ones that responded work as a guitar tech.

As one that have serviced, modded and repaired literally several hundred instruments for over fifteen years, most of the Squires and other Korean, Chinese and Indonesian instruments I've serviced came to me because of a faulty switch in the first place!

TBH, OP, I just can't imagine any reason for why one would want to change the 5-way to a 3-way on a 3-p'up strat... however, as the money is yours and can do with it as you please, my advice is to get a switch like this one:

It'll last an eternity and a half.

HTH,

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Maybe he's going HH? I've had very good luck with import switches; I've had faulty/loose Gibson switches though.

HTH,

Wouldn't you recommend he get a 5 way super switch if he is going to replace anyway? That would allow for some flexibility down the road.

HTH,

I can appreciate your advice here, but your arrogance is quite unnecessary.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I bought a cheap switch on EBay a couple years ago for a guitar I was building. Installed it last year. Replaced it a few months later because every now and than when I switched to bridge pickup it would just go dead.
Replaced it with a Switchcraft, never again will I try to save $5 or $10 on a switch.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I don't choose parts by price. I choose by manufacturer and experience. CRL makes great 3-way blade switches. I found I never actually use the quack positions of fenders, so 3-way is fine for me.

Funny how some people interpret what they read.

What you may not be aware of is, the interpretation tells more about yourself than the other person.

Anyway, for the record, at least in my neck of woods, of all the things I've been called, good and bad as well, actually, arrogant is just not on the list. Opinionated, experienced, seasoned, knowledgeable, stubborn, capable, apt, thorough, are among the ones that I keep hearing from both friends and customers.

Been called arrogant or similar lately, mate? How does it make you feel? Would you care to share?

We're all ears! ;)

Lee, learn to understand what the other is trying to say. He's asking for LESS flexibility. Why would I complicate things even more when he's asking for opposite?

Lee, when are you going to learn? What would the Lord say? You're going to burn for at least three eternities... enjoy the short time you have left. Enjoy it while it lasts... ;)

HTH,

Do you have to have ever worked as a pickup winder in order to give recommendations on pickups?

Can you find a reason why anyone would opt for a one-pickup instead of a three-pickup guitar?
