Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Do you have to have ever worked as a pickup winder in order to give recommendations on pickups?
Well, you don't necessarily need to wind p'ups to give advice or recommend certain ones over others, but as someone that's been a pro musician with an over twenty-five years long career, that also's been moonlighning as a guitar tech for over fifteen, I'd like to think that that would somehow qualify as a valid means to back up my statements.

Anyway, since you've asked, I've been known for spin some coils for the fellow local aficionado when opportunity arose with no recorded complaints to date. ;)

Can you find a reason why anyone would opt for a one-pickup instead of a three-pickup guitar?
I would never deliberately choose to have a guitar with a single p'up.

HTH,

Been called arrogant or similar lately, mate? How does it make you feel? Would you care to share?

We're all ears! ;)

Actually no... I'm typically a very humble person and I don't mind one bit being corrected when I'm wrong. However, if the correction is presented in a rude or barely-veiled rude way I will take offense. There's simply no reason for it... the correctee is made to feel small while the corrector inflates his/her ego.

In a nutshell, I felt that it was rude the way you came into this conversation and set yourself above the rest of us who had already answered. I can certainly see your point about cheap switches and your advice seems sound, but you could have come up with a way to give it without being rude to the rest of us.

Let me get this straight... the way I worded my advice somehow "offended you", and by calling me out on this you think you're entitled to talk as you represent the "offended" feeling of the other than me 188,946 REGISTERED members and the potential 8 times greater amount of people watching the forum at all times? Since when and how all that enormous amount of people chose you to voice your opinion as their own? That's what the "rest of us" part would entitle, just in case you you didn't think it through and the meaning of words or sentences mean so much to you that you chose to publicly punish me for your own "interpretation".

Sorry to say, but if this very fact is not considered the quintessence of ARROGANCE, by your own words, then you don't even know the very definition of it, yet you loosely used it in your favor to follow your punishing agenda against me. Now you see why I told you about saying more about yourself than me?

Thank you for going to such lengths just to prove my point. though. Much appreciated! ;)

Your Honor, I rest my case! :cool2:

Actually, I think there only a handful of us that had replied to the thread previously, but that was a GREAT deflection! Thank you for making MY point! [emoji1303]

I no longer wish to derail this thread by arguing with you. If you REALLY want to continue this, let's take it to PM.

Otherwise or until then...

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Considering I've replaced two broken import switches, I don't see the allure of saving the equivalent of two pack of strings on a switch. Or maybe I'm a sucker and CRL isn't as good as I think?

Don't take it personally. At least he has shyte to share. You want nice guys, check out Jemsite. Everyone there seems to suck's Rich's ass and are extremely opinionated.

@Lieutenant, I was trying to say that switches are nobrainer you don't need 25 years of guitar making experience to determine whether expensive ones are better than cheap imports. And it is 'arose' not 'arised'.

I hear ya on that one. Tried hanging out there a couple years ago but there's almost nothing in terms of useful (or even enjoyable) conversations!

"TBH, OP, I just can't imagine any reason for why one would want to change the 5-way to a 3-way on a 3-p'up strat"

I already have a multiple pickup guitar. This one is just going to be less multi.

I'm also putting together a guitar with no switch, and I'm putting in two arcade buttons. One won't even be connected to anything.

Figure THAT out.

Simply having 2 import switches like you posted and taking that as a rule is NOT accurate - nor anywhere close. In the case of longevity you do need to have a lot of experience.....over many years. That way you get an average that is actually accurate.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Quite an argument about such a simple thing as switches... Oak Grigsby's are that cheap, I don't see why you should buy some far eastern thingy. About LP switches I have no experience, but would consider them to be safer to buy cheap as mechanism should be less "special".

Buy cheap if you want. It's not big thing if it breaks, just buy some other brand then. Pointless to argue about that.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Besides the durability of a good switch, they 'feel' better to me. For someone that will use it several times within every song, it is important that I like the way it feels. Same with volume controls- I use the YJM Speed knobs for volume and tone. Worth it for me.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I replaced a generic 5-way switch with a Ernie Ball 5-way in my Strat a bit over 5 years ago, and it's excellent.

It feels very precise and light to operate, and it's the most reliable switch I've ever had as well.
It's outlasted Fender and OEM switches I had during that time in other guitars.

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

I'm not the most qualified to comment on durability (don't play live much), but I've had excellent luck with the Chinese switches on eBay. I've got some guitars going on a decade without a problem. If you can wait a few weeks for shipping, it's hard to beat them at a buck or two. That's my experience anyway, FWIW

This too. I've found some Squier switches to be a bit clunky.

Though price doesn't always tell it has that good feel: One of the worst was Bourns push/pull pot. I bought it after breaking two Fender pots, wanting quality component that would last. It was bad in every possible way. Since then I've only used Alphas...

Re: Switches - Differences, Prices and Preferences...

Yeah, price isn't an indication of feel. It could be an indication of durability. I've tried expensive switches that almost take 2 hands to switch. I have also tried expensive pots that feel like there is a layer of sandpaper inside them. Some people, who never use the switches or pots might like this. I don't.
