switching between different types of guitars

Slash and Angus are the first two that come to mind that play one type 99.9% of the time

Re: switching between different types of guitars

sure....but they're not posting on forums about how uncomfortable it is to play other guitars ;)

Ill bet slash wines to his wife all the time about it. "Les Pauls are so uncomfortable to play and I hate them, but the other kids will tease me and say I'm not slash anymore without a LP" LOL

Re: switching between different types of guitars

I love playing guitars that feel really different - I find that I end up playing differently, so it inspires a bit of variation when writing riffs or solos or whatever. If I'm holding a LP I know I'll channel a bit more of my Slash obsession, or if I'm slinging my Strat I'll be more likely to play a bit more old school blues, things like that.

Slash also plays a Mockingbird. When I think of great guitarists - Hendrix, Page, VanHalen, Clapton, Haynes, and others they all cycle through a variety of guitars to get the right tone.

What's your point?

Empathizing with the OP. Sharing an opinion. You know, standard message board stuff...

What's your point in asking me what my point is?

I guess I'm looking at the "issue" with less of an absolute frame of mind, particularly when I say that many great guitar players play only one style of guitar. Yes, Slash (is he great?) plays a mockingbird & Hendrix played a V, etc...but how do we know that they did or don't feel a little "awkward" when playing them, and only play(ed) them to get a certain sound or tone?

Most are fairly strongly associated with one particular type of guitar, though.

On the other hand there are guys like Richie Sambora and Joe Walsh who will change guitars every song, and jump between Strats and LPs and Teles and what have you.

Re: switching between different types of guitars

I like one type of sound more than I get used to one shape. However, it usually happens that one style gives me the sound I want, so I guess my argument is invalid.

+1. That's very common to see. Even Clapton and eric Johnson will play a 335 on a few songs, Page goes back and forth between LP's and Teles, and a double neck SG. Keef changes guitars every song or two. So does Joe Bonamassa. Besides Strats and V's (he owned 3 V's) Hendrix also was photographed on stage playing a 335, an SG Custom, and an LP. Many big name guys I see on stage have a rack of guitars up there with them, and they usually won't all be the same kind. They want different tones for different songs.

Rick Nielsen has to have the highest guitar count per show hands down.

Re: switching between different types of guitars

No, I wouldn't call it awkward. There is an adjustment period of mere minutes, and then I'm back in the zone on the new guitar. I absolutely LOVE the contrast of radically different guitar designs.

Re: switching between different types of guitars

Switching for me is a blessing and a curse. For awhile, I was buying and selling so much I never found a home. The blessing is diff guitars give me diff inspiration, The curse is you have to readjust and cant really learn the nuances of the guitar. Ive gotten to where I mostly play either my LP or my Charvels, so even tho they are pretty diff, the adjust isnt so radical as Ive spent a bit of time with both..

Re: switching between different types of guitars

I don't feel awkward switching around. I actually like doing it. For instance, my two main gigging guitars are an Esquire and a Les Paul Junior. They're quite different beasts. But in the end, they're pretty much interchangeable as long as they're both in my hands and I'm playing the same stuff on each.

Switching between electric and acoustic takes a moment of adjustment, though.

That is where it does get trickier. I have a thinline acoustic with a wizard type neck now and it makes the transition a bit more comfortable.
