switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

Hey guys! So i had a thread some months ago about getting my MXR carbon copy delay. Freaking loved it and still do. But today i noticed a sort of soft "pop" whenever i engaged or disengaged the unit. I'm not sure if its always been there or if its a new problem because i'm usally in the middle of playing something whenever i switch the unit on or off.

Is this normal for the pedal? If its just one of those things i gotta deal with then i'm fine with it, otherwise i'd like to know how to troubleshoot this.

thanks in advance for any help!

Re: switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

This is a common problem with many mechanical bypass switches, like those used in MXR pedals. It may get better or worse depending on what other pedals you have in your effects chain.

The problem can be solved by adding a pull-down resistor to the circuit. This is a high value (1.2 Meg or higher) resistor between the switch and the ground.

Try moving it around in the effects chain and see if it makes a difference. If you want to try the pull-down resistor, post a gut shot of the thing and I'll tell you what to do.

Popopopop...dey call me da flooting dc...popopopop...erm well yeah....
Is more profound on hot amps(where the dc has been turned up for more grit)
Trouble with the 1M is that it turn the bypass into a mumbling old man, if you have more pedals that has the same trick done to it.

Re: switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

Well the problem goes away when i dont put my chorus after it. Either way i'm gonna hold of on any mods until this becomes a real problem. I usually switch it on/off in the middle of playing a riff/lead anywho so its pretty unnoticeable.

thanks for the info on how to solve it though, guys. I appreciate it

Re: switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

honestly i've been trying to listen for that little pop and i don't hear anything.... i don't play all that loud though, so that might be partly why.

Your chorus should be before the delay in your FX chain. As a general rule, put the delay at the end.

That will probably solve your problem and the chorus/delay combination will probably sound better too.

Re: switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

if you are using a dc power supply stick a battery in it, disconnect the power supply and see if it still does that. I have had flaky power supplies cause other pedals to do this in the past.

Fulltone had a post in his tech section regarding switch pop.
He said it was static build up that was often solved by just pressing the switch a few times.

Re: switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

tomorrow i'm gonna crank up to full volume again and see how things pan out with the chorus back in front, behind, and out of the chain.

in other news. i love the crap out of my carbon copy!

Re: switching noise on MXR Carbon Copy

Hi, I've been having this problem with my MXR Carbon Copy for months and I don't know what to do. I know a pull down resistor could help but I just don't know where it has to be placed in order to solve this issue. I'm posting a couple of shots of it. Thanks in advance

I've encountered this with a Rocktron Short Timer Delay. I just had to switch it on and off a couple of times before playing and the problem
went away.
