Taking out a pickup.

Hey guys! I have a Crimson C4 bass with PJ passive pickups(no selector though). I was thinking if I disconnect the P pickup with only the J one remaining and fix the wiring, will my tone change drastically?

Re: Taking out a pickup.

The stock Powersound pickups in your Cort Action C4 bass guitar are not of the highest quality.

Disconnecting the P style pickup will rob you of the option of the deeper, fuller tones that any pickup positioned six or seven inches away from the bridge saddles should provide. It will not alter the tone from your second pickup.

By itself, the bridge position J pickup will sound bright and kinda wiry. Rolling down the tone control will remove some of the high frequencies. What the standard wiring cannot do is reinstate any of the low frequencies that the bridge position pickup fails to transduce.

In my opinion, there is no advantage to disconnecting your P pickup unless you intend to replace it with something markedly better.

Re: Taking out a pickup.

oh I should clarify, my bass is a low-end Korean bass, not a Cort Action.
does the same apply if I remove my J pickup?

Re: Taking out a pickup.

My mistake.

Unless they are linked in series, the removal from circuit of one pickup will do nothing to "improve" the sound of the other pickup.

Re: Taking out a pickup.

I wasn't talking about tonal improvement of the other pup, I was thinking if the overall tone would be different.

Re: Taking out a pickup.

Yes inasmuchas the instrument would have a vastly reduced range of possible sounds.

As described earlier, a lone J pickup, close to the bridge, will emit a bright, wiry, almost piano-like sound.

A lone P type pickup will emit a stronger signal with far more of the fundamental frequency information but, possibly, not as much high frequency detail as one might wish.

The idea behind having two pickups is to be able to blend the best qualities of each type in its respective position to arrive at a satisfying sound for whatever music style you happen to be playing.

To my way of thinking, two not especially good pickups is still better than just one not particularly good pickup.
