Talk about Straps.

As the subject. What are your experiences with straps in terms of quality, functionality, durability, etc.

I've discovered that there are some straps made by Planet Waves that I really like - they're some kind of canvas, and they're the first straps I've ever had that didn't grab at my shirt and cause me to be constantly readjusting. They just slide around wherever I want em, even with a heavy Les Paul.

Re: Talk about Straps.

Im also using Planet Waves strap, a leather one. i'm using it on schaller straplocks.

Re: Talk about Straps.

A good 10cm(4") wide all leather strap is still the best imo. Combine this with schaller locks and it will feel good no matter how heavy the guitar is and it will be safe.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I like a wide leather strap. Though I do have a DiMarzio nylon one (the type Vai uses) that's been on my Strat since sometime around 89 or 90 and is still going strong.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I use the $5 Ernie Ball straps. They're 2" wide nylon with leather-esque ends. I have black on everything but my G&L, which has red.

Re: Talk about Straps.

i like the way the Fender and Levy's cotton straps feel. Nylon cuts into my shoulder, and leather straps usually cannot be adjusted as small as I need them- I am 5'6, and usually at the smallest settings are too big.

Re: Talk about Straps.

The first one I bought was one of those cheap nylon straps. It hurt like hell. The second one I bought was a soft leather strap, it was comfortable but I hated how it tugged on my shirts. My two favorite straps are my Fenders, a tweed one and one with squares and Fender logos on it. A guy I used to work with went into the custom leather business and said he could make me a custom strap which I really want to get, just need the money.

Re: Talk about Straps.

on my SG i use a really old strap that i have no idea where it came from, but the top is embroidered to give it a cool look and the underside is leather. i like the leather because it keeps the headstock from sinking down when i let go of the guitar, but the SG is light enough so that it doesn't really grip on to my shirt so much.

on my les paul, i use a nylon strap. it was cheap, it isn't uncomfortable, and it gets the job done.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I'm with Tom M. I use the Ernie Ball nylon straps. They're great straps for the price and longer than most which seeing as I'm 6'4" is an advantage. I also use Schaller straplocks on all my guitars.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I just have the free cheap-ass strap that I got for free, I really need to get a better one. It's not comfortable and it distributes the load to the middle so it starts to hurt after using it for a while.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I have a different strap for each guitar, and since I'm partial to leather straps--my starp collection is probably worth more than some of my guitars!

I really like the Franklin Straps from Greg Bennett (of Samick fame). They are really nice and are good values.

Ditto. My leather straps feel good when I play for hours. And they don't rub me raw when I play with my shirt off.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I only like soft, supple leather straps. I'm out on nylon, canvas, ect.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I like wide, padded leather straps. I have shoulder trouble and the wider padded straps are a big help. Lew

Re: Talk about Straps.

My current favorite is a strap I had made to "resemble" Peter Green's strap from the Fleetwood Mac days.

Over the years my favorites have been the typical 50's style "pad on a skinny strap" kinds. I would also make the 2.5" at the length I prefer by taking some cotton webbing and sewing some leather ends to them. I have a really soft, really wide strap that someone gave me a long time ago- I hated it because it would fold over onto itself, so I sewed a piece of leather above the straplock as a stiffener- now it's my favorite "heavy guitar" strap.

Re: Talk about Straps.

My strap is a very basic Levy's black strap, came with first guitar and it's been my favourite since. I've been meaning to try out a bunch of different ones though.

Re: Talk about Straps.

I am not picky when it comes to straps. I have basic black nylons on the fiddles I have. I might actually get a wider leather strap for my heavier Epi LP, if I have some coin burning a hole in my pocket.

I do think this may be the ultimate strap for an all black SG. I've got one on my Iommi. I could get a Planet waves with crosses on it...but that is pushing the motif a little too far. It's the first black strap in the group pic:

I got a reasonably wide Levy's leather strap for my Dean. Has an embroidered flame which i think looks cool and not too over the top. I would have that on my kramer but theres already a nylon one on there which works just fine. Schaller locks on both guitars:)
