Talk to me about baritones

I'd like to pick up a baritone, preferably H-H but I'm flexible on that. There aren't a ton of options out there, and there's a lot of variation in scale length and other details between models. Tell me which ones you like & why.

Re: Talk to me about baritones

I like the Danelectro Dead On 67, but it's not humbucker ...

Re: Talk to me about baritones

The Hagström Viking Baritone is supposedly quite awesome. Semi-hollow, with a humbucker in the bridge and P-90 in the neck.

Re: Talk to me about baritones

I have a Danelectro Hodad that I like a lot.

One of the things I dig about the Hodad is it's a 30 inch scale which sounds long but the nice thing is that it's nice and clear due to the longer scale and with string changes you can tune it to almost anything you want.

I keep it most often with 14-68's in either B-B or A-A but you can also use a set of 13-62's for C-C or a more slinky B-B or if you want to get yer Joe Perry on a set of 24-84's will let you go to E-E ala Bass VI.

Since I can cover anything as high as C and as low as E with one bari I see no point in a shorter bari. If I want something higher than C I'll just use a guitar tuned down a bit OR capo the Bari!

What do you want to use the bari for??

Thats the other thing, you'll never get modern heavy bari type sounds from a Dano but for twang, tic-tac lines and roots stuff nothing tops 'em in my opinion!

Re: Talk to me about baritones

I also will add that the construction of the Dano's is a bit low buck but the tuners on the Bari's are Gotoh and solid, the bridges are sort of junk BUT there is a GREAT aftermarket bridge on the market thats a no mod retrofit and the 90's ones have killer stock pickups.

Good question, something I didn't bring up in my OP.

I'll be using this mostly for my post-rock/ambient originals. So, it will split duty between clean/wet tones and some heavier dirty stuff. My thought right now is to pick up one of the PRS SE baritones and drop in a pair of PAF Pros w/ push-pull pots for coil tapping.

Re: Talk to me about baritones

I almost bought one of the old Epiphone Goth Les Paul Studio baritones, with the black hardware and black satin finish. It was nicely balanced and fit me well. Had a really nice growl. I think the memory of that guitar may well drive me to look at baritones at some point in the near future.

Re: Talk to me about baritones

Sounds like yer hung up on buckers but for stuff like like those ambient tones singles are hard to beat.

Hard part is when you find a Bari you rarely fine more than one in one place!

Just shop around and see what turns up...shop hard and make sure you get a deal, that way you can flip and try again if you miss the first time out...

Yeah, that's the tough part. There are really only two shops here in town, Guitar Center and a local shop that's a bit bigger. I was in GC yesterday and they didn't have a single baritone, I need to head across town to check the other shop.
