Talk to me about Peavey Mace 2x12

So I am moving into a new house and the guy who just moved out left a Peavey Mace 2x12 (Series 320 T) amp in the garage. He said it needs some tube work.

I know NOTHING about this amp. I have never heard of it before but it has like 6 tubes in it so there must be something good, right?

I have a feeling it was made to be playe loud and dirty since it's like 130 watts.

I actually need a cleaner amp to go along with my JCM 900. Any chance this one would fit the bill?

Let me know what you think.

Rock on.

Hey, a blast from the past.

This amp was used extensively by Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special for both recording and live work.

Meant to be played VERY loud.

Very raunchy sounding.

Going by memory, tube power amp and solid state preamp?

Not a bad amp. Believe fairly popular due to the above association.

Trust this helps.

You are right, the Mace was originally knocked for having to be driven very hard in order to get that "raunch".

Believe miles of headroom available.

Re: Talk to me about Peavey Mace 2x12

I am trying to decide if I should take advantage of the "FREE AMP" to make it my clean choice or try to sell it and get a Blues Deluxe or something.

Has anyone messed around with different tubes or anything with this bad boy? Any chance of "Fender-izing" its tone with different tubes? Am I trying to cram a square peg in a round hole by thinking that I could make this my Clean Tone amp?

Discuss.

Re: Talk to me about Peavey Mace 2x12

I used to have a couple of Peaveys, and I think they are great amps, but it won't sound real Fenderish. Those Peaveys seem to have a very thick punchy midrange, and the highs are not as "open, airy, and string-y" as your typical black-face Fender. It's a very usable tone, though.

I've always liked these Peavey amps from the 1970 and '80s, and you may find that it is a good counterpart to your Marshall.

I am going to Guitar Center today to check out a Blues Deluxe. If it grabs my heart, like I think it will, the Mace may be hitting eBay!

Thanks for the input. I'll try to let you know how things turn out.

Rock on.
