Talk to me about the 2006 MIM tele

Sam ash has them in lefty. Gonna play one tomorrow. But I will have nothing to compare it too. Several questions. Has anybody played the 2006 standards? the fender site says jumbo frets and hotter pickups. Is there really that much difference in quality, playability and sound than with say an American Tele? And finally if I do get it and decide to change pickups what are the suggestions given the standards body type etc. Thanks in advance.

All I know is the one I got was a 2006 I belive and it fell apart in my hands. I can feel/hear no difference.

They are very nice guitars. One of the best buys out there IMO. I've always liked the MIM models except for one thing, the frets. They were just too small for me. Starting this year they come with medium-jumbo. :) The electronics are upgraded as well. For $400, you can't go wrong. Only other Tele that is better IMO is the Highway 1 (which is an American body and neck with Mexican electronics and hardware).

I have looked over the fender site and did not see where it says the electronics are upgraded. Where do you get that from?

It's in the specifications and was also in the NAMM information. Ok, well, it's not all of the electronics, just the pickups were upgraded. Still the rest of the electronics aren't bad IMO.

Musicans Friend makes this claim i dont see the difference but some might. They say the pickups are "re-voiced and hotter".

Got mine over the weekend, I really like it so far, it plays nice, (I will take it in for a setup anyway), the pickups though seem to be a bit less powerful then either my MIM tele or my SG. The pickups do seem to be set farther from the strings then the pickups on any of my other guitars, wondering if this is normal for a tele............

Cool. Glad you like it. The pickup height is part of a setup. You can adjust it yourself if you want. It's all personal preference.

I don't have a Tele *yet*. Got one spec'd out that I'll be building though. Of the upgraded MIM's that I have played (there's a shop near my work that I go to frequently) I like the pickups. In your pickup thread I think I said something along the lines of leaving them as-is for a while if I was to get one.

Re: Talk to me about the 2006 MIM tele

I hear ya....LOL. My Epi LP had the stock pickups in it for about 5-6 months and then they got yanked for Duncans.

For my Tele Project, I'm pretty set on the Hot Rhythm for the neck. For the bridge, it's either the Hot Lead, Jerry Donahue, Quarter Pounder or a Fralin Blues Special. Not 100% sure yet. I'm going to be talking with Lew at the Dallas Guitar Show in a few weeks so I'll get some feedback from him. He'll be able to hear my style and suggest a few things.
