Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

The Gibson P-100 is, indeed, a P-90 lookalike pickup. Unfortunately, much of what I consider desirable about the P-90 gets cancelled along with the RF interference and hum.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the P-100 ... UNLESS you have any strong opinions on how a P-90 is supposed to sound.

I own a Gibson Les Paul Junior Special. Its stock pickups were P-100s. They sounded alright. The problem is that I do not want soapbar pickups to sound "alright". I want them to blow my socks off. Proper P-90s should have a fruity rudeness about them. P-100s (and, for that matter, SD P-90 Stacks) lack that vital rudeness and edge.

If you like how the guitar looks and feels and you can get a good price, buy it. You can always change the pickups later.

Awesome guitar, not so awesome pups. Like Funk said, not quite P-90s.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

Very cool guitars. Worth picking up IMO, and they are super HOT in black (especially if you dye/darken the fretboard so it looks more like ebony)! I would love to have one as my next archtop, to compliment my 330. P-100's can be replaced by P90's with only moderate (and completely hidden) modifications. People on the Internet don't like those pickups very much. In making them humbuckers, I think that the whole attractive character of the single coil pickups was lost. In fact, I feel that way about all stack pickups I've ever tried. But who knows. You have to decide for yourself. You might even like the P-100's.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

P-100's are not my bag but IMO they get a bad rap...they are cool pickups, have a cool tone overall and since they are humbucking pickups you can really pile on the gain if that's your thing and no noise!

As for the ES-135, I dig 'em...there was a stock P-90 version as well as a humbucking version plus the P-100 version we're talking about.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

I agree with TGWIF. P-100's get a worse rap than they deserve. I won't say that I love them, but I will say that they are unfairly criticized, almost entirely by people who expect the impossible: for them to sound just like P-90's.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

I used to have one with humbuckers. It was a great guitar, but I sounded too much like Ted Nugent with it.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

P-100's are very bland, the Duncan Stacked P-90's are a far better alternative if you are bothered by the noise. The guitar is badazz, wouldn't hesitate for a second if you dig it..

I'm not sure what modifications ItsaBass is talking about I dropped both SD Stacked and regular P-90's in without mods? Maybe needed a little thicker foam but that was all other than solder for me.

Re: Talk to me about the Gibbo ES-135.

I have both a Gibson ES-135 and a Gibson ES-137 Custom.

They are lifetime keepers for me. I bought the ES-135 from RockStarNick and it had already had the P-100s replaced with Fralin p90s so I have no comment on the original pickups. I've used that guitar primarily for blues and jazz performances and a little bit of rock and roll. Because of the nature of semi-hollows you do have feedback issues at really high volume and high gain but it's gotta get pretty far up there for it to be a problem.

I play in a pop/rock band that covers a lot of 80s, 90s, and modern rock and roll with some 80s style gain and the ES-137 handles it very well. I do have to manage the feedback creatively but it never gets completely out of control.

The ES-135 is considerably lighter than the ES-137 Custom. Don't know if that's just my two specific guitars or an indication of the weights across the spectrum for those guitars.

My ES-135 plays better than my ES-137 does. I don't know if it's the weight, or the rosewood vs. ebony, or what but it just plays better. The only reason I really even got the ES-137 was because my ES-135 would buzz like crazy (single coil pickups and all) at several of the clubs I play in.

If you have any further questions, please just send me a PM.

The routs are deeper with P100's. You need something to take up the extra space. That's it. I'd use wood shims, personally.
