Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

Quick question for ya, how important do you think it is to tap your foot to keep rythem while playing? I ask because I have no rythem and notice that I don't tape my foot.

I don't at all either, you don't need to to have rhythm.
It's not important IMO to tap your foot, timing improves via the usage of things like metronomes, drum machines, playing with other people etc.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

I find rhythm is a thing that you need to just get a feel for yourself. Feel the tracks, feel the drumbeat of them. It sounds cheesy but the best way to improve your rhythm is to just sit there and honestly work on it, listen to as much music as you can, get into the groove of it. Tapping your foot is only an extension of your rhythm moving into your body.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

I agree with the others. I don't tap my foot, I actually hate doing it. Practice with a metronome and also jam along to some cds, that will help you tremendously.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

Thanks, guys. I've been playing for over 20 years. When I play with a band, I can lock into the rythem and jam. But, when I'm alone and have to play a rythem, it just comes out spazzy. I just don't have an internal rythem clock.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

i can't do both decently at the same time so i don't do it either. i don't think it is important either because according to my drummer i am usually more on beat than the other guitarist.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

Depends, but I'm not sure what it depends on. It's just something I adapt to automatically.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

i only tap my foot when playing live, and thats when i'm getting really into it for the audience. to develop rhythm you just gotta get a feel for keeping time and feeling the tempo

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

Always have something going....only way to get a good pulse to me!
Sometimes I tap both feet...to get a more swingy feel into it!
Or just nod my head.....a pulse is important!

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

When I'm recording, I always will at the start to get the bpm internalized. I'll do it for a couple of passes thrugh the first riff, until I feel totally comfortable with it.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

I've made the concious decision that whenever I'm playing, I'll have the drum machine running. I have a Zoom G1 and it has a drum machine built into it.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

i always tap my feet unconsiously when playing.. well i guess it's involuntary sometimes. i always always do this whrn playing alone.

i also use a metronome or a drum machine when i want to follow or dub a pre-recorded track. when it comes with a metronome, i only listen to 1st few meters then i ignore it the whole time. but i get back to it when i'm lost. but i usally stop the recording when i get lost and re-record all over the track again.

it's a different case in a band. i always follow the drummer, well at least with my former bands. i get lost when i can't hear the the drummer or if his signal is weak in my monitor.

well depends on how you practice. when you practice, you develop muscle memory. and people develop it in many different ways.

if your out of sync, tapping the foot, metronome or whatnot would not generally help you instantly (like it would make you a better player in one day). it takes practice. if you practice more, then you get more accustomed with the foot tapping or whatever rhythm guide you.

if you just strated tapping you foot, like just yesterday, you'll find it somewhat awkward hehe. but with practice, sooner or later you'll get more comfortable, and this would just come off naturaly. practice always helps. and just feel the beat =)

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

I think it does help, especially if you're a bass player trying to lock in with a drummer.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

I am a born drummer.I tap even when i don't play!!!

I'm also a drummer... since the age of 3 so ever since then ive never been able to stop. Sometimes i don't even notice that im doing it. Also if im soloing, sometimes i cant get it down until i start tapping my foot.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

I usually tap or shake my head with the rhythm except when I solo. Then I'm too busy counting notes per beat!

Niels took the words right out of my mouth.

In my last church, one of the musician's was having trouble finding the timing. The keyboardist told him to watch me: "He's always keeping time with some part of his body."

Sometimes I have a good feel for the timing. Sometimes I have to consciously tap my foot to maintain it. It just depends.

Re: Tapping foot for keeping rythem??

Tapping doesn't make up for bad rhythm. Now you know where some note it, but if you are relying on it and your brain is busy with other things you will have no idea where the "1" is.

Recording yourself with a computer so that you can see where you hit what note, timing-wise, and then improving is a better path.
