When you think of acoustic guitar companies, one of these names are bound to pop up. These companies are considered and endorsed as the best. IMO, it's a toss up between Taylor and Martin for the best overall with Gibson trailing as a distant third. Just like the Fender/Gibson poll, If you could only play one brand for the rest of your life.... which one?

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I voted Gibson because I generally get along with J45s super well. Played a 60s one while on tour, and now I have my own. Could be any brand though, as long as I connect with it.

I think they all would sound terrible running into a JCM800 with a tube screamer in front.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I voted Gibson, even though I would rather have a Collings. My primary gigging acoustic currently is, and likely will be for a long long time, an Epiphone Masterbuilt AJ500R. I've never played a guitar for under $3,000 that I liked more.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

Any brand. It's the individual guitar that matters. I tend to like Taylors and Martins over Gibsons but I've played plenty of winners and plenty of duds from all three companies. My favorite acoustic that I own is my Blueridge BR163 and I like it even better than my three Taylors, each of which both cost two or three times as much as my Blueridge. But not every Blueridge is great and neither is every Martin, Taylor, Collings, Guild or what have you.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I voted Martin. But Guild is not a choice, and that is too bad IMO. For me, it's pretty much a tie between the two.

My favorite Martin model is the D-35 three-piece-back rosewood dreadnought. My favorite Guild is the F50 jumbo.

I've played many "nice" Taylors, but I've ever come anywhere close to finding one that I "love."

Gibsons are fine...but far fewer of them blow me away than do Martins and Guilds.

The only one of the four I don't own is a Taylor.

Taylor: Easier to play, more 'exciting' designs.
Martin: Sounds better.

The choice is clear.

One of my mates has a Taylor, and it's bomb proof! another has a Martin in mahogany, and it's delicate as hell, but has a tone to die for [they're in the same band]. I have a Gibson, and it sounds, looks and plays fantastically, but I'm always afraid to take it out to gigs!

Guitars are really musicians tools, and it's what tool fits the job for me. If i could afford not to be precious then, I'd probably have a different opinion!

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I recently did months of shopping for and comparing acoustics, and the answer I came up with was Cole-Clark. They sound at least very good acoustically, and the electronics blew everything else away. Through a PA, which is how most folks are going to play, lets face it....they just destroyed the Gibson, Martins, and Taylors.

Martin. I'd get one of the small-bodied mahogany Martins, and I'd never look back.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

Out of the 3 listed, Gibson. My main and only acoustic is a Guild that I love.

I'd be down for a Gibson Advanced Jumbo Pro anyday.

Ovation...

Just kidding.... I bought a Martin about 6 months ago. 1st acoustic in about 35 years.

Whatever you get, keep it properly humidified.
