Re: Taylor or Martin?

Takamine and save ya self a few bucks :)

Having said that my sisters late boyfriend had a baby taylor and it was a peach of an acoustic.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

Here you have the point of view of an amateur acoustic player. Tho, for me the best acoustic I could get woulb be a Taylor. In my head it is the way to go.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

Can't go wrong with either one, but since I have a Taylor that's what I voted.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

I've never really been able to bond with any Martins that I've played. On the other hand, I've loved every Taylor I've ever played.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

Both make good guitars. If I were going for a high end model I'd skip both companies and get a Collings or a Larrivee.

Martin is more traditional, built "the right way" and they all have a unique character.

Taylors are built by machines and all sound the same.

I'd rather have a good Martin than a Taylor but i'd rather have a Taylor than a bad Martin.

What I really want is a Larrivee. Those are the best acoustic guitars. <--period.

I have no business playing either, since I beat the hell out of guitars, but I like the sound of Taylor instruments.

Good call. I do love Martins but Larrivee makes a fine acoustic.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

Was years ago when i last played a Taylor or Martin. From the distant memory of playing to two on the same day i remember walking away thinking the Taylor was a hair nicer. They were both fantastic acoustics though.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

I'm a Taylor man. But I like Martins, Collings, old Gibsons, Santa Cruz, Goodalls, and other guitars too. Still, I think you get more for your money with a Taylor and except for some rare and truly exceptional Martins that I've owned and played, I prefer the tone and feel of Taylor.

I'm just not a Taylor guy. They look nice and sound alright unplugged but plugged in is where they sound best. For an acoustic I want it as simple as possible nothing onboard that is going to keep it from resonating. Additionally, for me, it's darn near impossible to find a Taylor that doesn't have a cutaway. I don't like the way cutaway acoustics sound by and large so that's another turn off for me.

All of the Taylors I've played have small necks and not only do I like big honkin necks, but on an accoustic I think small necks are a detriment to the sound, both volume and tone.

Finally I have this weird mental thing about acoustics with bolt on necks. I own plenty of bolt neck electrics so maybe it's a mental thing, but it's hard to get "old" sounds, which I prefer for acoustics, with a different neck mounting system.

Re: Taylor or Martin?

I own 3 Martins. I had a Taylor which I hated. I traded it towards a Santa Cruz OM & I now have my life guitar. MY SCOM is hands down my favorite acoustic I have played. I find Taylor's to be very bright in general and I think the necks are to thin for me and the action is generally set way to low. I like acoustic guitars with heavier strings, higher action and setup in a way that you have to dig into them a little. Overall Martins are made that way. Taylor's are very well made & are consistent, more so then Martins, but for me I prefer the tone & feel of martins. Taylor's are really good acoustics for electric guitar players.
