Taylor Solid Bodies...any thoughts??

Cat In The Hatministrator
I sat and tried a Taylor solid body electric briefly yesterday, and was pretty impressed. Chambered mahogany body, with a flame maple top. Quite a wide fingerboard (not sure the wood, could have been ebony), very resonant. I didn't get chance to plug it in, but it has a 5-way switch which I believe gives a couple of split-coil sounds in addition to the standard for a 2 bucker guitar.

Anybody tried one?? What did you think?? It's priced at £999 here...

Re: Taylor Solid Bodies...any thoughts??

The only thing that would scare me off is they have proprietary pickups and there isn't much for replacements.

Re: Taylor Solid Bodies...any thoughts??

The one I tried had full sized buckers. I figured that any short-legged buckers would go in it...

Re: Taylor Solid Bodies...any thoughts??

Only the lowest-end model has the mini-hums and interestingly enough, it was the one I liked the most. Seriously cool guitars. I have nothing but praise for them...

But they are VERY good!

Stevie Bees, I got one on ebay a couple of years ago. It was the low line one, black with the mini buckers.

The guitar was excellent! The fretwork was Impeccable, playability was great and sound was terrific! The mini buckers covered the spectrum from sweet cleans to heavy music. I bought a replacement pickguard with the High output bucker and the 2 singles and it sounded cool too. The mini hums were special, so they went back in. If I wasnt such a gear slut, I could have made that guitar the one and only. I sold it cuz I needed to turn something over quick.
The guitar has some neat build features too. there is a fuse in the wiring that will blow to protect the player from shock if playing a club with bad wiring, the one bolt neck joint is superb, as is the tone transfer from the joint.. (it sustains like a set neck)
Anyhow, very nice axes.. Im suprised tons of people arent playing them and I REALLY want another

I'd just like to let you know that I blame you for my purchase today. I went on Taylor's website to check out the solid bodies and got distracted by their GS guitars. I know this is completely off-topic, but I had to let you know you are a bad influence.

Re: Taylor Solid Bodies...any thoughts??

I actually just recently took a tour of the Taylor factory from a friend of mine that is one of the builders....I really dig their acoustics but they have a long way to go on the electrics...I have tried the electrics a few different times. The one bolt neck joint is a very innovative design that needs to be commended but what I found is that even though the sound isn't that bad at all that the guitars aren't really meant for players who really need to shred...The cutaway is definitely not deep enough to reach the upper frets on any of the models and I would definitely like Floyds and other pick up options on them.....for their price point I had much higher expectations....Taylor is a great company and I'm sure they will come up with something even better soon.....

Re: Taylor Solid Bodies...any thoughts??

I'm definitely no shredder!! That's probably why it appeals to me! ;)
