I've been getting some serious GAS for an acoustic for quite some time now, and at my local shop Taylor seems to be real nice quality for a good price. Any suggestions for specific ones? Preferrably not overly large, and with a cutout to access the higher frets.

I've been checking around the website, and the 512-CE looks quite nice. I'm a generally small guy, so the contours and the cut-out are looking quite comfortable and practical from here.

Anyways, suggestions? Possibly on a 12-stringer?


Edit: YEOWEEE! I just looked at the pricing list for the 500 series. Nevuh-mind.

Then you should definitely check out the African Mahogany backed 300 Series, or the 400 Series which feature ovangkol. Ovangkol has a sound like East Indian Rosewood, and has a very nice figure.

I like Taylors--after years of looking and owning Martins, I finally bought a Taylor 710CE to use for playing out. Mine has a Fishman, I do not like the ES pickup. Taylors are vey well built, and have great actions. They keep their value well, too. I still have my six Martins, but I like the Taylors very much. My 710 is great guitar for performing live.

I have a 414. Very very nice guitar. Ovankol sounds awesome too. I liked it a lot since it's a simple guitar, I wanted a great sounding acoustic but without the cosmetic luxuries that make the higher end models "look" that much higher-end.

A buddy of mine has a 314-ce... very nice sounding guitar and the price was still lower than mine. the x14 guitars are grand-auditorium concert shapes: slightly smaller than a jumbo, more mids and very comfortable to play/hold. I put a Mag/mic in mine and it sounds incredible through a PA.

Just go there and play a few within your price range... I'm pretty sure you'll fall in love ;)

I have had a 310-ce for some years now and have done a lot of gigs with it. I highly recommend it. It's not a 512 or 710 by any means but add a dose of chours, reverb, delay when applicable....sounds really good. On a solo gig I bash the crap out of it and I'll only tune it 2-3 times to get through the night. The sucker is stable.

They're all great guitars, as far as I can tell. Just find one with the features you want and in your price range.

I have a Taylor and I think they are best sounding, best playing guitars for the money that there are. I love my Martin, and Collings, Goodall and Santa Cruz make some spectacular handmade guitars, but as far as a "production" guitar goes I don't think the Taylors can be beat. I'm not going to recommend a model...just try 'em all and buy the one that sounds best and plays best to you and which you can afford. Your money will go further if you shop for a used guitar and don't buy new, BTW.

Just to be contrarian: I've never been into the Taylor thing. They feel really great, which is why I think they're so popular, but the tone just doesn't do it for me. I've played a bazillion of them and recorded them next to many many other brands. I much prefer Larrivee in the high-end mass produced guitars. Opinions vary, of course, but if you can try one out you may be happier with it.

I bought the 314-CE, and love it. New it was just at $1500, and it's the anniversary model. Fantastic guitar. I just couldn't justify spending almost annother $1000 at the time to upgrade to the 6 series or higher. I love the way mine plays.

BTW, you can get them on eBay all the time for a grand or less. I've never played a bad Taylor, so I'd take a chance on one to get a good deal.

I've been gassing for a 714ce for about 6 years or so. I love those guitars!!
