TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Hello,

I am looking for some advice. I have some old guitar "Ibanez" style with copy of Floyd Rose. In general wood is of very good quality (alder) and was the top model for company that was making them in Poland, but it was like 20 years ago (bought in 1995).

Guitar has two humbuckers, one volume knob, one tone knob and two 2-way switches.

Now, I have refitted it with the new set of Humbuckers, but I was able to find a guy that made this guitar and he strongly suggested to re-do the wiring, as at that time there were more experimenting.

Current configuration for the switches is following:

- First switch turns off Neck pickup
- Second switch looked like Series/Split/Parallel from Seymour Duncan schematics (the amount of cables from old Korean Humbuckers was different than in SDs), so I reconnected exactly as on the scheme.

What I have is a sound, where I would play only in Bridge active pickup and operate only with Second switch.
After having a thought, I have decided to redo whole electronics (knobs, swithces, new cables etc.)

Now, the reason I bought this configuration of Pickups was a pursuite of some Blues like sound (Stevie Ray Vaughan), with ability to do some good rocking (AC/DC) and nice, warm clean tone for some of the chillout's.

Question: Please advice how I should redo the wiring having 2 Humbuckers on place, and four holes ( ;) ) that could be fitted with Knobs and switches. If required, I am not afraid to drill some holes (I am experimenting with this guitar before starting a guitar project).

Thank You!

Have you checked the Duncan site an looked at the wiring schematics there for something close to what you want? Sometime it takes a few things from multiple schematics to get it all together. There are also some sites you can find via Google that have alternate wiring schematics.

Or send out a PM to forum member ArtieToo.

Since a lot of SRV's tone was out of the 2 and 4 position, you risk being limited on the options with a 2-hum config. But you can get fairly close, depending on the wiring and how you dial in your amp.

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Thank You darthphineas for responce. Yes, I had some deep investigation on Duncan site, that is basiacally why I was able to put new pickups and connect them the way they work :) I am simply now looking more on the advice part than on the schematics itself.

By saying 2nd and 4th position you mean following options: Bridge and NEck in Parallel vs. Bridge and neck in series?
So this wold leave me with current controls: one switch for series/parallel and one switch for Neck+Bridge vs. Bridge only

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Hi,
Put the picture of the guitar and say what sounds are intresting to You,
I will do the wiring for You...

For example:
3-way switch (neck, neck+ brigde, bridge), (gives You all mods)
and 2 - way switch (neck - series, neck - parallel), (gives you nice clar sound of neck - personally love them).

BTW
I have same pickups :D - works perfect
Best regards
Knif

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

hmm
seems like you could replace the switches with on/off/on three way version

then have the center position off for each pick up

then either down or up would have the pickup active with either full Hum or split

just when choosing the split make one slug and the other adjustable
so it wont hum with both singles active

the split Jazz become a nicely bright single sound
for the SRV impression

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Thank you all.
Small pause for now (lack of time, going live with IT systems at work). I will be back with You in week or two.

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

GuitarDoc - not really the thing.
ehdwuld - yes, I want to have an option to get close to SRV like sound.
KnifeR - I would appreciate Your help!

In general,

1. Search for one SRV setting
2. Maximum versatility of options.

This is the only way to understand how different settings (splitting, series on/off) will work. From what I think, I could be missing one additional mini switch. Knobs needs to be replaces. So what I see here is that I might be able to fit 3 three way mini switches (to what extend they are reliable?) - I would need to drill an additional hole, which is not a problem...

Attached photos are before fitting with new pickups...
All Sugestions are welcome. I am coming back to guitar playing, so on this one I wnat to experiment a little bit to understand what I need, so as I mentioned - versatility of sounds would be good

TB-4 - sound really nice when it is taped.
SH-4 - sound really nice when parallel vs series.
__________________________________________________________________________________
3 way switch gives us nothing special beside the possibility to chose one of the pickups (for for wires condutor PUPs i would recomend 5-Way superswitch - if this is not a problem).
If You dont whant to get hum we can arrange the picups wiring with 5 way superswitch to have only no hum positions.

__________________________________________________________________________________
BUT... electro-box that you have at the picture is preaty small for additional miniswitch.
so maybe.... - one mini changet to 3 way toggle.
second???
?? - (spliting, taping, paralleling, phaseshifting???????)

I would recomend spliting.
As i like also the parallel neck SH-2 - I would recomend PUSH-PULL volume :):)

SO at the end with 3 Way toggle, one volume(Push pull - parallel neck), one miniswitch (spliting bridge and neck), one main tone, and SH2-TB4 You will get

Position no spliting no parallel:
1)Series Neck
2)Series Neck & Series Bridge
3)Series Bridge

Position splited (mini ON):
1)Neck singlecoil (HUM)
2)Neck signlecoil & Bridge single coil (NO HUM)
3)Bridge single coil (HUM)

Position no spliting but parallel NECK (push pull)
1)Neck parallel
2)Neck parallel & Bridge Series
3)Bridge Series - was before...

Spliting bur also Parallel on gives you... spliting :D - as the Neck in parallel is splited You can't get Neck in parallel :) (only one coil is on) - I will try to thing if the possition >Single coil Bridge and Parallel Neck< is possible...
I will let you know. Conclusion - you get 8 different positions.

Tell me:
How do you thing?

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

I'd replace the tone knob with a proper 3 way toggle switch for easy neck-both-bridge selection. Then I'd have the mini toggles do series/parallel or series/split north/split south for each pickup.

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Replacing the tone knob.... for splited humbuckers?????? Please.... it is LOST of versatility
Replacing the tone knob.... for Brigde HUM TB4?????? the same

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Hello

I would say... go with triple shots. And I would use this schematic

1. If You want seperate volume and tone control for each pickup go with this:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2ts_2v_2t

2. If You want seperate volume control but alswo phase and series/parellel switching use this
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2ts_2v_2t_phsp

3. And the last option... Master Volume and Master Tone and separate switches for phase and series/parallel
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2ts_1v_1t_phsp

I think it's the easiest way and you will have inifinite possibilities. Or You can also go with P-Rails.
Rails for nice SRV and P90 are great for classic rock like AC/DC or something.

Not a bad idea. A big LP 3-way is easier to keep track of. Then the two 3-way minis can offer series/split/parallel. Very cool suggestion.

Hello

.

Interesting idea. But I feel a little more comfortable (at least on some level) with KnifeR
But I was also considering the vinta9e idea by adding, - not replacing.

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

So the form of wiring is as I said.
I have an idea how to do the wiring for you that on the parallel Neck and splited coils (so both switches >push pull< and >mini< are ON) you will get:
1)Neck Parallel
2)Neck Parallel & Bridge split coil (HUM)
3)Bridge split coil (HUM)

You have told me that you whant to have:
2 push pulls
1 miniswitch
1 3way-toggle

I have used 1 push pull - 1 miniswith - 1 3 way toggle.
Question is:
What you would like to do with this second push pull (or miniswitch - as we can to utilize the push pulls both, and leave the miniswitch for further).
posibilities:
-Brigde parallel switch
-Series parallel switch between both pickups (that meens with "pushed-in" push pull the pickups would be in series both - current from one pickup goes to other not to ground - massive resistance).
-Phase switch (for example brigde out of phase with neck).
-kill switch (to shut down the guitar - i would recoment to do this in miniswitch)
-treeble bleed stwich (also recomend to do this in mini).

Give me the answer and the diagram is finished

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

There is not a lot of room in that cavity. A volume pot without the treble bleed cap is perfectly capable of taking the edge off split sounds. You don't need a lot of controls for versatility but you need to know how to use what you have.

One more thing - this guitar is not going to sound like a stratocaster.

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

I decided with Mr. Belcik that main point is VERSATILITY.
After his answer I will suggest what to do.
And you have right the box is pretty small.
:) - some other comments are really welcome :)

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Colleagues:

1. Yes, I am searching for versatility. Having it on board, I can then figure out what type of sounds I like and search.
2. It is not, that I want to have something (with respect to knobs, switches). I have two humbuckers, two holes for mini switches and two for knobbed items. It comes naturally to use push pull knob, I might additionally drill one hole. And of course using 3-way switches (LP type or smaller).

I know it fill not be as strat, But coming close would be enough for now. If my come-back to guitar playing will be successfull, I will buy/make/mod one to have :). This will be then more like Ibanez style guitar.

Re: TB-4 JB + SH-2N Wiring idea

Mr. Belcik
One of the miniswitch goes to 3 Way toggle
we have 2 push pulls
what to do with ministwich?? (what additional) you need to decide...
