TB-6 Duncan Distortion or SH-8 Duncan Invader

I currently have a SH-10 Full Shred installed in my Kelly USA Custom Shop, GREAT tone; but I need a higher output. I've been debating which pickup I should get and I just haven't been able to decide.

I'm a thrash/progressive metal player.

I want high output but I'm afraid that the Invader will slam me with bottom end and never relent. I'm also worried that the Duncan Distortion won't have as much output as the invader. I love natural and pinch harmonics but I don't wish to sacrifice dynamics for output. So is it the Invader or the Distortion.

PLEASE!!! No "oh god, this is the best pickup" crap please. Whine and do pissing contests somewhere else. I'm about to record an album and I really need to know which one I should buy.

ok first off, i only actualyl have experience with the duncan distortion.

the DD will have plenty of output but will compress dynamics a fair bit.

i dont think the invader will be overwelmingly bassy, more overwelmingly low middy

if you like lotsa treble/high mid go for the DD, if you like lotsa low mid/bass go for the invader.

Thanks man. I think I'll go with the Duncan distortion. I like my pickups to shine bright and my gear to supply my bottom end if at all possible.

I'd love to colaborate with Seymour Duncan in the future and see if they'll take the Invader and trembucker space it and put different pole pieces and windings on it to get the same output but with a more Full Shred style eq. Custom Shop pickups baby!!!

DD should do ya good, only problem is that its not super great for cleans. you have to roll the volume or tone nob to get good cleans out of, theres a reason its called a distortion. good pinch harmonics, good for riffs, good for leads.

I would say to select a DD also. I have gotten some great clean sounds out of a DD through a Mesa F-30. It isn't the clean pup of choice, but it performs much better clean than one would suspect.

Bro, if you like the FS but want more output, install an Alnico 8 magnet and be done with it.

Re: TB-6 Duncan Distortion or SH-8 Duncan Invader

The main problem I'd be running into, if I stayed with Alnico, would be that, tonewise, I just wouldn't come close with my lead guitarist's Invader. I'm trying to balance: accenting my lead guitarist's tone and keeping the dynamics that I love.

In response to Joeydude, my band's new cd is total riff based thrash metal. Think progressive era of Megadeth. (Peace Sells... through Youthanasia) The songs on our MySpace were recorded a year ago, when we were originally going to be just a progressive metal band. I have been really mulling over my choices for a new pickup and I couldn't get a straight answer from anyone on the net or even elsewhere.

If the Alnico VIII would do the trick I still wouldn't know where to get it or how to install it. It would be a great help if you'd show me how or point me to a trustworthy source that would.

I'm also preparing for a new Jackson custom shop for 2007. If I can find the right pickup I'll stick it in that one too.

I just wish that someone would make piezo saddles for Floyd Rose Bridges.:fingersx: That would give anyone perfect cleans. I know Ibanez made a Floating Bridge with piezos built in but I want forged steel, not diecast, thank you very much.
