I put a SH4 JB in the bridge of m y hss strat it sounds ok but not quite what I was after so now im Thinking a 59 trembucker for classic rock, I had a lil 59 in a american standard some years back and I liked it so im thinking a full size 59 might be what im looking for, any thought on a good classic rock SD pup ?

Re: TB59 Bridge in a strat for classic rock, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, LED Zepplin,

I think that would be great for what you want to do. If you want more "umph" you could do the Custom/59 hybrid too.

Re: TB59 Bridge in a strat for classic rock, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, LED Zepplin,

The Little 59 and the full 59 do not sound quite the same.

The hybrid is a good suggestion.

However, what is it about the JB that is not working for you? Also, more details about your guitar and your amp and your effects will help people be able to give more specific answers to help you narrow down the best options.

Yes, what is wrong with the JB ?

Lower the height, it really lets the JB breathe.

Well I was using it on a marshall stack amp setting expecting some really nice tone, but it wasnt happening, so I went on to a mesa boogie rectifier amp model and it started to sound good, which I find strange that I had to use a very high gain amp model, I will try lowering the pickup as you suggested, its around 4mm from the strings at the moment. another thing is it doesnt seem to have good bottom end lots of highs even with the tone rolled back, its a alder MIM strat rosewood board, I used to use a TB4 JB in a Ash strat Maple board and it sounded great. that was through a cornford valve amp, I now use a Roland Cube 40Xl modelling amp. I will play around with amp models over the next two weeks before I decide if its a keeper.

sorta sounds like there have been some amp changes that might also (i.e., probably) be a factor.

Whats the deal with the hybrid custom/59 never heard of it untill you guys suggested it ?

also theres a tb14 custom 5, like a jb with more bottom end so I read, maybe thats also an option, the jb still has bags of mid range I want something with more lows and less mids. I want a les paul tone or as close as a strat will get which is going to be hard.

it sounds good but not quite there, also its not a trembucker so theres two reasons to change it out.

I used to use a TB4 JB in a Ash strat Maple board and it sounded great. that was through a cornford valve amp, I know use a Roland Cube 40Xl modelling amp.
JB's sound great. Custom customs sound great.a 59 will sound great so can pearly gates. all great pickups for superstrats for the job you have in mind.
the amp? not so much.
I would not bother changing or upgrading pickups until the big important stuff is sorted out, and there is nothing bigger or more important in your signal chain than a good amplifier.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that a model on a roland cube is anything but a digital facsimile of a real amp. Im saying this as a roland cube user too. They are fine for practice etc, but you really cant get a fair representation of a guitar or its pickups abilities if you are using a cube as your reference.
Keep your pickups and think instead about upgrading your amp first and foremost. That will get you 90% of the way to your perfect sound. Pickups are the icing on the cake to bring out the best of your amplifier and guitar combination.

Your right about the amp I have only had it a week and after plying with the settings gain amps the JB is starting to sound good, I was remembering cranking the gain on the cornford and getting amazing tones, this cube is good enough for me, I sold the cornford is was too big so a downsize was required, im sure I will miss the cornford in time but I am expecting to much out of the cube, as you said. but for £119 I think its a good practise amp.

That's the problem. It's a fine practice amp but no way is it a tonemonster. it's just 'ok'. Try it on a real mesa or marshall and be amazed. The pickup itself is fine. It's been around for over 35 years which is a neat testimony for its quality, imho.

Re: TB59 Bridge in a strat for classic rock, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, LED Zepplin,

I'd go with WHL TB-18 . It's works great copping the vibe of the bands you mentioned. It's got a more balanced EQ than the 59 with some nice top end sizzle. Awesome overwound PAF

Re: TB59 Bridge in a strat for classic rock, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, LED Zepplin,

I just put a TB59 into the bridge of my mahogany body Partsocaster and it is very good fit. I have used the 59 in the bridge of several bolt on neck guitars over the years and its always been a great fit.

I just heard this guy use a 59, sh4jb, tonezone and a few others I cant hear much diffterence between the 59 and sh4 but a huge difference in the tonezone all installed in the same stat but I think the 59 sounds better than the jb, the bass sounds tighter ?

Re: TB59 Bridge in a strat for classic rock, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, LED Zepplin,

I play a lot of old classic rock myself & I have used both the lil 59 & full size in a strat. I like the tone of the 59 better than the JB. the hybrid is like a 59 but brighter & more gain I understand. I like it on the videos I have seen demonstrating it. It sounded a lot like a screamin demon which I was using but I switched to the 59 on the strat I was using & like that better for blues & classic rock. the 59 has more bottom end than the Demon.

Re: TB59 Bridge in a strat for classic rock, ACDC, Thin Lizzy, LED Zepplin,

I play "classic rock" on all my guitars, electric and acoustic, but this is my only one with traditional humbuckers: A 2001 American Series Fender Double Fat Strat, the successor to the "Big Apple" Strat, Fender's first regular production American-made Strat with two full-size humbuckers.

It has a Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge and a Custom 59 in the neck, both firmly in the PAF school of tone and both unashamedly old-school. They handle all those sounds easily.

Looks nice, 2 humbuckers in a strat, very cool. I think I will get a 59 trembucker, and use the sh4 with the sh2n in a different guitar.
