Re: Tech 21 Power Engine 60 ?

I have a Tech 21 Power Engine 60 2X12. I am currently playing a Vox Tonelab LE through it and it sounds AWESOME. I will say this though, the stock Celestion 70/80 speakers didn't gel with me. I felt that the tone was dead, boring, lackluster. When I threw a pair of Vintage 30s in there it really came alive. I would have NO problems gigging that rig, though I've mostly just been using it for practice since I have full tube heads and 4X12s that I like to gig with. But it KILLS for practice. I picked my Power Engine up at a local pawn shop in mint condition last year for $225. Not a bad deal at all.

Pic of it when I was running a Kemper rack rig through it. I actually prefer the Tonelab... though in fairness the Kemper was there before I'd tried the speaker swap on the cab.

Yup, the Power Block was discontinued, they'll show up on eBay in the $150-$175 range often enough. It's a 150W amp that is about 5-6 lbs. Toss one of the AMT pedals into it and you'll get your metal tones in a light-weight package, and it'll push a 4x12 easily.

Don't mean to whore-up this thread, but I owned a pair of those Powerblocks that I used as backups to my Traynor YCS100H tube heads and the Crates killed it with a TS9 in front for Marshall style crunch. Cleans weren't great though. Blue glow out of them was awesome.

Re: Tech 21 Power Engine 60 ?

I suppose you can't get Quilters down there, can you? Those are pretty expensive too, but they have a Power Block style pedalboard amp that's good for 200 watts I believe.

If you need powered cabs, I still suggest a powered speaker and a cab sim pedal in before it, like either the AMT stuff, a Torpedo or a redbox with the cab emulator turned on.

I guess that it's because I am the anti-tweaker. I really like tube amps with a single channel (or maybe two), where I can "set it and forget it" in regards to my tone. Same with pedals. For some reason, the Tonelab has always gelled with me. This is my second one. I actually mostly use the PC interface to tweak tones on it (hooked-up via USB --> MIDI cable) and find it very intuitive. The Kemper was not intuitive (for me). I also did like the Eleven Rack that I owned and found it to be very easy to use. But the Vox suits me just fine for a modeling solution. Plus, I'd swear that the little 12AX7 tube in there gives it a more authentic tone than the modelers, profilers, etc out there.
