I'm about due to buy another pedal. I'm always interested in trying another take on the Rect-O-Matic sound, and since I think Tech 21 tends to make good stuff, I'm keen to try this one. Any thoughts? A lot of the videos are terrible.

How sad is this thing compared to a V-Twin? I already have a Throttle Box.

Does anyone know about the difference between the U.S. Steel and the U.S. Metal?

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

It's the same box, not sure why there are two different names with same paintjob. It models a rectifier amp. The old california pedal was modelled after mark series amps. You can use it as distortion pedal, the eq controls are very powerful.

Although, I did not like the sounds in the demos for this one as well.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

It's pretty good. I have the British pedal. If you get the Sansamp Classic you can do even more amp models and distortion. The Flyrig and Flyrig RK add delay more options for recording and live performance.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

I think it sounds better than the V-Twin, which was harsh direct to a mixer. The SansAmp boxes all sound great direct. I used a Blonde for years (before I upgraded to a FlyRig5). This one would be my choice for a Dual Rect sound direct to PA or recording DAW.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

The new version has the sansamp defeat switch which makes it easier to use with an amp, but the old versions work well too, just may need some to make more drastic EQ settings.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

I know Tech21 just introduced their new Cali Fly Rig, which has a great set of features, and probably sounds amazing direct, too. i have the original Fly Rig and love it.

That's cool; that's cool. I'm really digging the U.S. Steel. It does well into the HRDIII. It opens up really well, has the low, droning Santana type of sound, crunches, screams, etc. It's chewy in the right places and has a dark, intimate texture that hints at many secrets. It has teh thrashez. So I am a happy piglet.

I think I figured out why it's called U.S. Metal now.

I have one Trech 21 pedal- the delay...got it cause i wanted clean , not dark repeats with a warm'ish character. I never go for digital stuff, and would probably prefer a new issue Duncan delay.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

And so we reiterate: Tech21 makes good stuff.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

Yeah, I have one of their Trademark 60 amps. It is a wonderful amp, and records really well, too. The direct out is fantastic into a PA. I put it in front of me (like a stage monitor) on stage, and just send the direct out to the PA. I also have used their Blonde pedal direct to the PA as well with great results.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

That's the great thing about pedals. You don't have to choose -- you can just buy three or four of the leading contenders in each category. I've decided to do that with rect-o-fryer pedals.

Re: Tech 21 U.S. Steel

Got another one of these on the way, to replace the one that I gave away. With the V-Twin here now, I need Mesa-flavored pedals for reference. It wouldn't do not to have the U.S. Steel on hand.
