Tech used superglue to glue inlay back in... and it's not flush :-)

You can imagine how ecstatic I am that one of the leading techs in Puerto Rico used super glue to glue my 3rd fret inlay back in... and when I got the guitar home I realized the inlay wasn't flush.

How the hell will I get the inlay back out now?

I think I'd rather use a clamp and glue it in myself.

Oh man! It was in the most ideal situation for recovering it and now it's more ****ed. I would abuse those fools.

Take it to another tech if it's under warranty.

A little acetone should do it.

Would it penetrate int/under the inlay enough to lift it?

Probably. It evapourates very quickly, so it's worth a try.

Heat also causes superglue to fail.

The hard part would be lifting it at the same time. Maybe a micro sized toilet plunger could work?

Just looking ... here's one idea ...

" A method i saw people use that seems more fool safe, cut a piece of shirt square, soak it in water, and get a soldering iron, lay not the tip but the headed handle part over the wet shirt, roll the iron over your inlay, it should start steaming, wet your piece of shirt again, or have a couple already wet in a bowl, and repeat the process. the heat should be more concentrated on your inlay instead of a big area with a heat gun. The steam and heat should loosen your inlay. "

Whatever method is used, there's going to be the possibility that the inlay will get damaged or destroyed, so a new inlay may need to be sourced and trimmed.

If it was me i would just use the tip of a clothes iron over fabric.

Hey, i used the same guy a buddy uses for his R9. I had reason to believe he would do a good job.

Now I'm starting to believe I should buy a stock pile of broken guitars and learn the craft myself.

...Since it is a Gibson...the possibility of it ever was flush in the first place is slim at best!

PR is bankrupt so maybe super glue is all that the "tech" could afford. Hell, maybe a "tech" that cant glue an inlay flush is all the shop could afford.

Superglue is ok....it is how you use it that determines the outcome
By the way...it is easy to break up...superglue as it is quite brittle.

Super glue may be brittle, but whatever the inlays are made of, MOP, Abalone or plastic, aren't they brittle enough that they could crack, chip or split trying to get them out? Seriously asking, never worked on an inlay before.

Forget the glue. Just file that damn inlay down to fretboard level. Don't forget to cover the area around the inlay with tape to protect the wood from scracthes.

Oil the fret board first see if it's up or the board is down

I've completely given up on techs. Barring stuff that requires actually carving into the wood, I do everything myself. I've had them botch too many things for me to ever trust one again.
