Techs. Gotta love setting up dream guitars!

Tonight, I got a call at 9:30 from my producer friend in the middle of a session, begging me to do a restring/setup on a client's guitar.....and it has to be right now, because the rest of the night will be tracking with some outboard gear that's rented and going back in the morning.

So, I tell him to bring me the guitar with a set of strings (luckily he had some), and $20. I had an hour turnaround.

They showed up and I was so happy it was a Gibson, because I can dial them in fast. So he hands me the one guitar I wish I had to round out my Gibson collection.....a late 90's Gibson Historic 59 LP, modded with 2 aged Pearly Gates and a pullup tone pot to split the coils. I was stoked that it had some of my very favorite Duncans in it, just so I could enjoy playing it while setting it up.

Man, what a great guitar! I love all mine as much, but this 59 was just killer! I quickly adjusted the pickup height, truss rod, action, cleaned the nut slots, cleaned the guitar finish, restrung and stretched the strings, then intonated it 100% perfect......I don't need no stinkin Feiten system. lol

I spent the last 15 minutes playing it through my Marshall Jubilee...clean and highgain, while stretching the strings completely. That guitar is destined to haunt me....being a joneser and all. A lightweight vintage sunburst flametop with aged nickel PG's and splittable, using the top tone knob. What a killer LP! A real joy to set up and enjoy for an hour.

Sounds cool to me man, did you happen to get any pics of it?

No, but I may go down to the studio tonight and see how he likes the setup, and I also want to take a look inside his guitar to see the electronics. I have a Goldtop LP with two pullup tonepots, and I had to dremel the inside of the top a little to accommodate the longer pots. I want to see how his is done.

Maybe I'll get a picture of it too. It has a perfect flametop.

Who's the owner? Anyone we might have heard of?

Nah, just a local band doing a 4 song demo.

Just like Fender, you can feel and hear the quality differences between every price point in Gibson's line. Sure, you can get a good midline Fender or Gibson, but when you play the best instruments they make, you can see where the extra thousand went.
