Tele Antiquity Lead Pickup Install

Hi,

My first post here -- hopefully you guys can help me out.
I have a Fender 50's Classic Tele where I just had a Tele Antiquity Lead pickup installed, bu left in the original neck pickup because it sounded great.

I picked up the guitar from the repairman today, but noticed that the middle pickup selction (both pickups) sounds extremely weak and lifeless; however the other two positions sound great. Are my pickups "out of phase", and if so, how do I correct the problem. Do I need to change out the neck pickup too? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like it...try switching the leads of one of the pickups (just one of them though) and that should get rid of the phase issue, if that is indeed the problem. The pickups together may still NOT be hum canceling though.

Good luck!

Hey Steel; Welcome to the forum. Its a darn shame that someone who calls themselves a guitar tech wouldn't do the smallest amount of research to see that the pups would be out-of-phase with each other. But more importantly, wouldn't he have plugged the guitar in and tested his work?

Its just a shame. I need to open a shop. ;)

+1...he would have easily heard that they were out of phase had he plugged it in. The only way to find out if it will work is if you reverse the leads of one of the pickups

Re: Tele Antiquity Lead Pickup Install

yup, out of phase. its not quite as easy as swapping wires but close. you also need to move the ground wire to the cover if you flip the neck or the base plate if you do the bridge.
if you arent comfortable with doing it then bring it back to the same tech. he SHOULD do it for free since he didnt catch it. it is more work for him so if he did it right the first time and charged ya an extra $5 that would have been cool but in this situation he should just do it

Re: Tele Antiquity Lead Pickup Install

Thanks for all the great feedback. Just one question -- if the swapping or grounding of the wires doesn't do the trick -- will I need a new neck pickup?
Thanks.
