Tele for Surf/Surfabilly

Going a bit "unorthodox" here.

I've recently gotten really into surf & surfabilly, and I've had plans for my next build to be a tele.

I've got some nice poplar waiting.

So far, I'm thinking of the poplar body and birdseye maple neck. (of course it'll be Surf Green!!)

Also thinking about a 24.75" conversion neck, for a little more warmth, and I'm used to playing a Les Paul and an SG.


As for a pickup, I wanna keep it simple and do only a bridge pup.

I'm trying to decide between a traditional tele bridge (would do a reverse angle), or to go with a filtertron and go for a Fender Cabronita vibe.


Which application do you think would work better for this style of music?

And what are your thoughts on the scale length?




And FWIW, I've got a '71 Deluxe Reverb and a 60w Bassman clone, so I'm good to go in the amp department

I rather like the TV Jones 'Tron option but I strongly recommend having two of them. The neck/rhythm position pickup sound is sublime.

I'd go with a P-90. But then again, I love those little bastards.

Get yourself to a Fender dealership and test drive a USA-made La Cabronita Telecaster. It is different and familiar at the same time. Through a valve amplifier, the dynamics are as touch responsive as anything else that I have ever played.

If you are determined to have only one pickup, go for a TV Jones 'Tron type with switchable output levels - like the original Fender Custom Shop LCT Junior model.

I put a set of Barden Danny pups in one of my tele builds. With the tube reverb and Bassman pure surf. Pipeline anyone?

If your plan is to play Surf with a Tele, it will need a Bigsby
