Tele-guar guitar idea. Yay or nay?

Hello there strummer friends, I'm new on this forum :)

Last night I was looking at some modded Telecaster porn, and I came up with a crazy idea :
What about a Telecaster with Jaguar control plates? Here is a pic I made up with PS :
Teleguar.jpg

Imagine this, with a rusty-old-heavy relic'd finish on it (maybe dark green?) and a p90 in the neck position. I'm thinking of using the standard phase/out-of-phase thingy from the standard Jag wiring in a bypass-able circuit, but keeping the Tele controls to still have that Tele bite. And if there are un-used switches, i could probably use them for some unusual mods (Yeah, I like it unusual.)
I would probably use it to burst out weird but bitey tones, like a blend of Radiohead and Stoner tones (Black Sabbath, Baroness...).

Is this even possible? Is this cool? Is this madness? We'll find out! I need your opinion on that project, and maybe your advice if you have some.
Thanks in advance guys, and keep on rockin'!

Same controls as a Jag? Cool. Same exact plate on the top? Absolutely hideous.

Dude...seriously! Don't do it! Just cut the holes for the Jaguar controls in a regular Tele pickguard. No need to take a cool wiring idea and use it to make a horrible looking guitar.

:D

Re: Tele-guar guitar idea. Yay or nay?

Neither fish nor fowl, if you ask me. Change for change's sake.

Phase reversal and series/parallel interconnection of the pickups are both possible with either the Fender Baja Telecaster circuit or by using two push-pull pots.

The Jaguar Rhythm circuit will do nothing that the regular volume and tone controls cannot.

If you expect Jaguar sounds, you need to change the scale length, the bridge/tailpiece, the pickups, the way that they are mounted and the resistance value of the control pots. If you do all of those things, the guitar will no longer sound like a Telecaster.

P90 in the neck position is a good idea but it will overpower the treble pickup.

Sounds cool, but I agree about the top part Jag control plate. Maybe go with something like a standard Tele/Tele Custom hybrid pickguard, sticking the Jag controls where the 3-way goes.

Edit: Something like this... (Yeah, awesome photoshop skills, boo-ya!)

You guys are right, probably don't need Jag wiring to acheive its functions. However, I think Psykel's design might be the thing.
As for the sound, I don't want it to sound like a Jaguar, I like the way the Tele sounds. The idea was mainly cosmetic, with the possibility to use these additional switches for some other stuff (i don't know yet, but they will find a use!) And to respond to Funkfingers, I plan to put a Quarter Pound bridge pickup, so it will probably match better with the P90.
Thanks for the comments btw, and if you're interested or want to see a beginner ruin a Tele (and I think I might actually ruin it. Or succeed. Hum, we'll see :) ), then I will try to find the final design, then do the mod!

I'm glad you liked my design! And I think it would be a good idea to try and experiment a bit with switching and stuff. Different kinds of filters, a kill switch, out-of-phaser and such.
I'll be following the build thread, if you do go ahead and make it.

Re: Tele-guar guitar idea. Yay or nay?

Okay Funkfingers, you got me again. I'll use a coil tap to occasionally reduce the quarter poud's output for something closer to the stock pickups (although not sure if this will retain the Tele sound...)
So guys, I was wondering what I will need if I want to do a new finish, and how much it will cost.
I'm planning to start this project mid-August or something like that, I need to move in back home (living on an island for 2 years is great, except for guitar strings, rust on the hardware and stuff...).

Re: Tele-guar guitar idea. Yay or nay?

I'm thinking about doing the same at some point (after gathering a bit more experience), but I reckon it's going to be easier to wire without the three way switch, as jaguars don't have that anyway. What I suggest is having the lower jaguar assembly where the three way switch would have been in the control plate, but keep the upper assembly in the pickguard.

And if you want a new finish:

This is pretty detailed.

Here's an idea: use Psykel's design, but have the each of the pickups wired to one of the jag switches as an on/off switch, with the last switch to switch between series/parrallel/ Then have the tele's 3-way lever wired as a tone selector ala the old Esquires.

Re: Tele-guar guitar idea. Yay or nay?

If it was me, i'd fabricate a steel plate for the top switches that followed the Telecaster outline of the top horn, as the Tele Custom pickguard does. Of course it would need to be chrome plated.

As for how to wire it up, I'd use the wiring scheme used in the Johhny Marr signature Jaguar from Fender ....

Re: Tele-guar guitar idea. Yay or nay?

I like the idea of strange and unusual wiring. The question becomes, what do you do with all of those switches?

I'd do this:

Use the three toggles for capacitor bank switching. Use a .022, .018, and a .010uf. (Those are all standard values.)
That will give you the following 8 positions: .050, .040, .032, .028, .022, .018, .010, and a "no-load" no tone position. (All switches off.)

Now use the top horn controls just like a Jag. The Tele controls become your lead controls and the upper horn controls become your rhythm controls.
