Re: Tele neck pickup - What's the best?
Truthfully, I've owned 7 Telecasters through the years, and still have 3 of the best from the 7. In that time I've used many a different Telecaster Pickup. Many Fender AVs, some MIJ's, & some MIM's, a lot of Fender CS models, Seymour Duncan regular production models, and Antiquity (I consider those SDCS models), Voodoo, Alan Hamel, Lollar, and Joe Barden's.
My absolute favourite neck models are the Duncan Antiquity II, and Hamel pickups, both are very good & different from one another, but equally great!
I don't think you can go wrong with either of Duncan's Antiquity models, though I haven't heard the Antiquity I (alnico 2), I'm basing it with my experience on the Ant II (alnico 5). I know A2 is still a lot different than A3, but I have enjoyed a few different A3 Tele Neck Pickups, specifically the Hamel's, Fender Nocaster's, and Fender AV '52 post 2000 models. Now that I mention it the Fender CS Muddy Water's (MIM Artist Series) A5 Tele neck pickup is a VERY cool pickup.
All in all the Antiquities share a very organic, and multi-dimensional sound to them. They're da bomb. I always have to shout out a thanks to Seymour & MJ on those pickups. Very unique, a lot of depth, can be airy, wooden, clear and smokey. Speaking of, I just talked myself into going and playing them.
