Hi Im sure this age old question has been asked before on here but Im trying to decide on which one to buy. Recently one of my guitars were stolen (a strat) an now I need to replace it but im not sure weather to buy a tele or a strat? Can anybody offer any advice or opinions on this delimma of mine.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

I voted strat but I don't feel like the results of any sort of poll would help you along, since all you will be getting is opinions, and the only one that matters is yours. If you had a strat and loved it, it's going to feel natural going back to one. The tele offers up some interesting tones, but it's all a matter of what you're comfortable giving up. I'd have a hard time giving up the tone of that strat neck pickup to get the cut I dig from a tele bridge.

What did you like about your strat, and what would you have changed on it that makes you think you would prefer a tele?

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Up to you - I prefer Strat but I also like a good Tele... If I had a chance, I'd vote both. I'd toss a coin get one then start saving for the other,

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Ive played both but only owned a strat. I love the big punchy meaty open sound of a tele with the distortion and the twang from the cleans and i find them a lil easier to play but I love my strat for its versatility trem bar and because I can do volume swells and u cant really do those on a tele unless you have really long fingers. Really I just need a guitar with single coils because the group i play for likes to do old school an new R&B so i definitely need a single coil in my arsenal.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Oh and im not tryna go all out ima spend maybe 200 max cause i just built a custom superstrat from warmoth parts so im a lil low on funds at the moment

Re: Tele Or Strat?

If your budget is ~$200, and you just finished a warmoth strat, I'd say go for a used classic vibe telecaster custom.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Tele, and for one reason: that bridge tone. Oh god, that bridge tone. The neck pickup has never been my cup of tea but damn, a big, meaty Tele bridge tone is something that a Strat just can't match.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Esquire. **** that ****sy-*** neck ****.

That said, there's nothing like a good Strat. Hardtail, floating, rosewood, maple, ash, alder...they come in so many great combinations. With Teles, I pretty much love the '50's look and specs.

If I had to pick one, I'd take a Tele and put something else in the neck slot. Firebird, P-90, Strat pup, etc, just anything to avoid the typical Tele neck pickup. I'm not sure how much guitar you can get for $200 though; you may only be able to afford an SX or similar. That may be good enough, otherwise you may want to wait until you can afford a better guitar.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Im thinking i want a tele With a single coil bridge an a hum in the neck mabey a PGn or a 59n. Or a strat set up for hum sing sing. I can always swap hard wear later or if its good to start wit thats even betta

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Another good option, though I usually find myself wanting a neck pickup of some sort.

Yes, I was being facetious. I like Tele neck pickups. I just prefer the Esquire setup. I like having three switchable tones available from one pickup, as opposed to three switchable tones between two pickups. Works better for me.

He's not talking to Fender phobes so don't worry...you don't have to choose

Thank God, I woke up in a cold sweat last night just thinking about it! Actually, Page did some nice things with his Tele, so that's my point of reference.

Interesting how Strats had the early lead, but when the big boys arrived, Teles shot out in front.
